Tire Aspect Question

I've owned my Camaro off and on for 18 years and it's time to get it put back together. When I bought the car it had 205/70-15s on it and it still has that size on it. I know this is not stock and the the 70 aspect ratio gives a lot more sidewall and usually undesirable for a sports car as the car can roll on the tire causing poor handling.

So, the question is what aspect ratio should or could I run? Here is the items to deal with: I live two miles off the pavement and the road is pretty ruff, I live in Wyoming, and this is not a track or drag car.

Thanks for any suggestions or advise.

Re: Tire Aspect Question

I always ran 235/60/15's when I had 15in wheels, and they felt nice. Not sure about the 2 miles of dirt road, but they felt nice on the pavement.

Re: Tire Aspect Question

The reason I brought up the dirt roads is the graders usually turn up rocks and if your car sits a little to low it causes issues. So, if my thinking is right (Propably Not) the higher the aspect ratio the more ground clearance I should achieve. But, I would think there has to be a point at where this could become a negative.

Re: Tire Aspect Question

You are correct in that the aspect ratio being numerically higher makes a taller tire. The aspect ratio is a percentage of the width. So a 70, means 70% of the width ( a 205 cm tire), or 143.5 cm. The 60 would make that 123 cm.

Im sure the 70 series tires arent right for the car, but if it works who cares. Although Ill bet your speedometer is probably off. Going to a 60 AR would work better, IMO. Also, Im sure this site has information on the correct size for the car. Anything else will basically be personal preference.

Re: Tire Aspect Question

I checked the door jam, so the stock size is easy to get. I'm more looking for what has worked for others. With that said I'm leaning toward getting a set of 2nd Gen wheels and while looking into the wheels I found that the Z28 from 77 to 81 came with 225/70-15's on it, so I guess its not unusual for a camaro to run a 70 AR.

Re: Tire Aspect Question

You can go with a tire that's a different aspect ratio. But you don't have to unless your stock size is the 245/50ZR16. If your stock size is the 235/60R15 or 215/65R15 you will be o.k.,even on a gravel road.
