85-87 Iroc Rims, What performance tire?

I'm sure this question is asked a lot, but couldn't find any current answers.

I ordered me a set of reconditioned 85-87 Iroc Rims to put on my camaro. They are the 16" x 8" rims.

But I'm having problems finding a descent set of tires to go on these rims. I wanted to get a high performance summer tire. I can find a couple but seems a lot of the ones I can find have bad reviews (like Sears have some Kumho ASX tires in 245 / 50 / 16 but they have pretty bad reviews on 1010tires.com).

So does anyone have any experience with this search and can recommend a good set of high performance tires that will fit these rims? I'm ok with any sizes around 245 / 50 / 16 or 255 / 50 / 16.. but I don't want a huge bulge in the side wall of the tire so can't go much wider than that.

Bridgestone was getting decent reviews on the Potenza G009 back when I bought a set in 245/50. Those have since been replaced by newer but similar models (G010?) One of those got randomly killed on the I-10 so I replaced it with a Mich. Pilot Sport A/S Plus (I think.)

You could go more aggressive towards summer tire if you put the car up for winter or ran diff. wheels w/ snow tires. But I can't complain.

Re: 85-87 Iroc Rims, What performance tire?

Thanks for the response. I'm looking for Summer tires not All Season tires. It rarely, if ever, snows where I live and I would not drive the camaro in the snow anyway. This isn't my daily driver car. I don't even drive it in the rain most of the time and would make sure not to drive it in the rain during the winter to avoid any icy conditions (although I don't think any tire is really going to make a difference on black ice lol).

So I definitely want a set of high performance summer tires. The only bridgestone tires I see available in a size that will fit are the all season Potenza RE960AS. Again those are all season so not really what I'm looking for.

Right now I've narrowed it down to 3 choices,
BFGoodrich g-Force Sport
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500
Yokohama AVS ES100

All 3 are rated as ultra high performance summer tires (which really means mid grade performance as there is Max and Extreme Peformance above it). From the reviews I've read, the Firestones have the best ratings, followed by the BFGoodrich and Yokohama in the rear with a mediocre review rating. Price wise they are $113 to $134 a tire.

If I really wanted to splurge I could get a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, which are highest performance tire I can find (Max performance) available in 245 / 50 / 16 and they have higher ratings than the others, but at $226 a tire they are rather pricey. Seems a little too pricey for only one performance level up from the others.

It's to bad the Iroc rims aren't 17" rims, that size opens up a lot more options. But I decided I wanted to stay with a stock look so I'll just have to make do with whatever I choose in 16" rim size.

I love my G-Force sports. They hold really nicely, but I've never tried those Firestones, so I dont know how well they work in comparison.

I will buy another set next time I need tires for sure - hopefully the next set will be for some 17 inch wheels, though.

Thanks again for the responses. I think I've pretty much decided to go with the firehawks. They have a little better overall reviews than the gForce Sports and I saw this persons post:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/whee...wide-oval.html

And really like the looks of them on the car. The gForce Sport don't look bad on you car either InfernalVortex, but I think I like the tread a little more on the Firehawks hehe. Probably not the best thing to choose a tire based on, but the two tires seem close enough in performance that either should do fine I believe.
