Looking for a black center cap for 1987 Pontiac Firebird.
Checking on ebay; all I see are either caps with the silver bird or caps with the gold bird. My caps are original and the bird color is camel colored like the camel colored wheels on the car. Anyone know where you can get the camel
colored birds? Thanks.

Hmm... For 86-87 Firebirds, the book shows two "medallions", Gold or Silver. In other years you might have a different color, but the parts catalog doesn't really list the caps in any way other than gold, silver, chrome, etc. It's more complicated since some years list a number for cap with emblem, and others the emblem is separate, etc.



I've got a box of Firebird caps from God knows where, and IIRC there are more than a few shades of Gold bird caps, but the only way I could match one to another would be to hold them side-by-side to see if they glow like the sankara stones.



Anyway, you probably won't get too far with "Camel". One man's camel is another's "iridescent aardvark taint" or some such flowery name for a color. Your best bet would be to post a good clear photo of what you need, so that maybe someone can match them up for you.

Thanks for the reply. Saw your caps. Will post a pic of what I have. The gold on mine is not a deep rich gold as other caps I've seen. The car has always been garage kept, never outside, so no real chance of sun fade.

An example from the deepest, darkest depths of The Archives.



From left to right are three different "Gold" Firebird centercaps. They get darker as you move to the right. I should have dropped a chrome or "silver" Firebird cap in there to illustrate that the left most cap is most definitely a gold tone and not a discolored typical chrome bird cap, but I didn't think of it just then. The source of these caps is as much a mystery to me as anyone else. They came from junkyard cars, and they've been in my attic for about 15 years. Two of the caps have the same molding markings and codes as NOS caps I bought in about 2000. The other cap has a GM part number molded inside it. So I would say these are all OEM variations.

You're right. There is a variation in the gold tones. Mine have the lighter gold tone like the middle cap. Today I will take a picture of it and post it.
I wonder why there are variations in gold? Maybe a mid year or early year production thing?

Here is a good pic of the cap. If you click and enlarge the pic , notice the gold is not so rich.
