Wheels and TiresNeed help with wheels or tires? Got fitment issues? Have questions about tire performance and handling? Ask all of those questions here!
Hello all. This is my first post although I’ve been a member of this board for several years. I bought my first Third Gen last week and had a few questions about the tires. They are Goodyear Eagle 245/50/ZR16 and appear to be very slightly used, they look almost brand new. From the date code it looks like they were made in 2007. Are these the same type of (Gatorback) tires that came stock on the car? Are they worth selling to someone? Also I plan on driving the car maybe 10 miles per week. Is it safe to drive on them or should I just get new ones?
They are probably "OK" for show duty, but on the street, I'd say no. It's not that I think they will explode and you'll die in a fiery crash, but it's the unexpected.
Some kid runs out in front of the car, and you can't stop in time because you once soft and sticky tires are hard as rocks. It's quite a chance to take.
Those are the Goodyear “Gatorbacks” that these cars came with, although they were long discontinued by 2007. The date code on yours are 3 digit, not 4 digit, which means they were made prior to the year 2000. Most likely the 10th week of 1997.
At 25 years old, they are not safe to drive on other than a slow drive around the block. Even if they are not showing signs of dry rot, they are hard as hockey pucks. Along with having minimal grip on the road, I would be worried about the tires coming apart on the highway. Unless the car is a never driven trailer Queen show car, those tires should be replaced if you want to drive it.
Thanks for the reply. I will have new tires on it this week.
So the old tires have about 7 mm tread and no signs of dry rot. The look almost new. I know some people like to put these on "show" cars. What do you think a fair asking price would be to sell these?

Let me know should you decide to part with the Goodyear tires, as I’m interested. Located in central OK if you are in TX as the license plate indicates.
