LB9 speedo unit. The car checks out by the RPO codes and SPID as a true IROC-Z. It was a factory LB9, 2:73 positrac drum rear, 700R4 trans, Bright Red. Also cool is the emblems were in it, since the 1988-1990 style are pretty hard to replace. The interior needs a headliner, carpet, seat covers, console armrest, and dash pad, but is otherwise intact. It's in rough shape, but according to the RPO codes it's all there.

Pile O' Parts under the hatch. Most of this was from me disassembling the engine after I bought it, since the one it it had been left unprotected for 5 years and got filled with rain water. Thankfully it was an early 80's non-roller 305, so no big loss. The only thing missing from the engine was the smog pump (who cares) and heater valve diverter.

These rims came on the car, haven't been able to identify them. They are stamped US Wheel on the backs, but haven't found them anywhere online. The tires were brand new, still had nubs all over them! For some goofy reason they had the white lettering mounted to wards the inside though. Apparently the previous owner found curbs by braille as well...

The bottom end is assembled, and I installed an LT1 cam to try to boost the power and efficiency of the 305 a little. The heads are the 58cc LB9 heads, ported, polished and port matched to the TPI.

Just some of the rebuild parts for the project. I have everything to complete it, except time.

It had one of the hood louvers under the hatch, but the other was missing. I found a broken one in the junkyard and repaired it. Considering their replacement cost not bad. The TPI is going to get the same internal and external polishing as that on my Z/28.

Dusty, but a good cleaning brightened it right back up. I don't get to work on it much, but it's ready for the engine to go back in now.

The copper paint peeking behind the headlight bucket is the color I painted the engine compartment after stripping it bare. Problem now is I can't decide if I want to paint the car GM Atomic Orange, or paint it black with Atomic Orange rally stripes. Either way I think the engine compartment left as is will be striking.

Yes it's ugly. The car had been horribly Earl Shive'd at some point in white over the original Bright Red, and no care had been taken to mask off body seals. Most of it flakes off if you run your hand over it. The fender and hood are from the junkyard, hence the mismatch in color. I picked up the car for $300 with a clear title, and the only thing it was lacking was the hood. The last owner rear ended a truck, hence the missing hood, replacement fender, and cracked windshield.

The ground effects are removed by me for repair. Most of the issues with th body are on this side, mainly where the paint had flaked off and allowed surface rust to form. Thankfully none of it is cancerous.

My Z/28 in LEGO form. On the left is how it looks now, on the right how it looked when I first bought it. Both models are highly detailed, have correct interiors, engine compartments, working steering and suspension, and opening hoods, doors, and rear hatch.

It sat for a couple of years at my friend's place out in the country before I was able to get started on it. The taillights were spider cracked and brittle, and the paintjob was horribly orange peeled. I still have the original bumpers and ground effects.

Using the 1994 Camaro harness let me modify it to hide most of it in the fenders and behind the engine. Very little wiring is visible, and what is has been custom lengthened to keep things tidy. Next step is to build a Y-pipe so I can install my headers.

The interior was stripped apart, the wiring was a mess, and everything was filthy. I ditched the interior since almost none of it was in decent shape, and for a while used a 85-90 Firebird dash and center console. They were much more comfortable than the heavily plastic Fisher Price "My First Interior" of 3rd gen Camaros.

How it looked when I first bought it. It came with a disassembled 305 TBI out of a 1990 RS in it and a bunch of spare parts. It came with a black hood off the RS as well, but I found the white early Z/28 one in the junkyard, but unfortunately the rust was too pervasive on it to save.

I ditched the Firebird interior and switched to one from a 94 Camaro, including a modified full harness. I have fully functional vents and hybrid 3rd/4th gen door panels, prototypes for now. The dash still needs the top cap fabricated. The gauge in the lower center is for O2 for tuning my Megasquirt. The red buttons on the steering wheel are for the horn. Window and mirror controls are on the doors, as are the front speakers.

The engine is a .040 over 327 based off a 1991 4-bolt 350 roller block. The bottom end is balanced, and it has a GMPP LT4 Hot Cam. The heads are 63cc swirl port heads with LT1 springs, modded and port matched to the TPI, itself off a 1985 Corvette. The injectors are 28 lb/hr, fed by an MSD 2225 electric pump. Spark comes from a Mallory Hyfire 6A, and external coil, and a gutted HEI that only has the pick up coil. It also has full A/C and emissions delete (it's exempt by age).

The ground effects are a mix of 85-90 Z/28 / IROC front bumper and chin spoiler, 85-90 Trans Am side skirts, and 91-92 Camaro rear bumper and skirts. The Trans Am pieces match the flow of the front and rear as if they were a factory set, and let me delete the emblems. I put 1968 Camaro 327 and fender emblems on instead. The paint is Duplicolor Chrysler Director Red, and can look anywhere between Brandywine, to purplish, to brownish, depending on lighting. It's temporary for now.

How it looks now. I found the '79 Z/28 hood scoop in the junkyard for cheap, and it gives the flat RS hood character. The side mirrors are 91-92 power units. The body has a lot of imperfections, but not bad for a 30 y/o former drag car that's had a hard life.
