I've got a 1992 Firebird convertible that I'm quickly learning is fairly rare and a bastard to get body parts for.

The hood, front left fender, and bumper cover got trashed. We had refurb shop redo the bumpercover for $275 and it turned out great, thank ***. We got a fender and then learned about the ASC thing. Apparently the fender is different because of the conversion on the car.

Money is a big problem right now, and I don't need to spend $400-$500 for a dealer to special order it.

Can you go through ASC direct?

If the fender is similar to what they did on the camaros, you should be able to drill out the spot welds on the bracket on your existing one, and modify a regular fender yourself, thats all the morons at ASC did with the fenders, hack up existing ones.

 

Whats different about the fenders?

 

They never acually made convertible specific fenders. They did make the brackets which weld into the back of the fender, but ofcourse theyre discontinued.

Anyway, you need to cut the fender right at the top of the factory brace. It needs to be cut straight across, you can use your old fender as a template. Then youll need to remove the bracket from your existing fender, and tack weld it onto the new fender. I suggest getting either a base firebird fender without gfx holes, or getting one from a 91-92 car, as the previous 90 and back gfx had much higher gfx mounting holes, which would not be covered up by the 91-92 style.

I had a feeling the cut and weld was the thing to do, but I had hoped otherwise.

Yeah, the mounting braket is different on the bottom where the ground effect goes (mainly by the door) It seems to indent some for the ground effect.

So the fender difference is because of the strengthening riveted into the quarters, or is it because of something else? I never knew there was a difference.

 

Its different because of the bracing ASC ran along the subframe. The regular fender would kind of wrap under the body and has that single bolt... well on the verts, the brace is in the way.

 

Oh and good luck finding a new bumper cover. From what Ive found, theyre not made by any aftermarket companies, and Hawks wants $350 for a USED one!!!

 

We got somewhat lucky on the bumper cover. A place in Tupelo refurbished the one that was originally on it for $275 (primered and all). They did a killer job, highly recommended. I'd give them a try if anyone else has the same problem.

Tupelo sounds far... shipping on an item that size would probably kill me.

 

I didn't consider that. I'm in Memphis. They had people in town that would pick up periodically, so no shipping concerns here.

I have no idea what it would cost to ship. But if you order one used, you may be in the same boat anyway.

It has been frustrating finding parts, ..., used at least.
