Spindle mod Q's
Hi, I have a few questions......
1. How do you modify the spindles on a camaro to use 1LE rotors?
2. Can I do this myself?
3. Will I compromise the strenth of the spindle?
4. Are the GM 1LE spindles just modified stock spindles or are they worth the big bucks to buy them right from GM?
Thanks in advance as always....

It really is very very simple to do. When you cut ooff the excess material of the stock iron caliper spindles, it is not critical that they be cut at a perfect angle accordining to the reference dotted line below. Just hack away leaving adequate spacing of metal material from the holes needed to be tapped. cut leaving about minimum 3/8" away from both holes to insure strength, yet you could cut leaving as much as about 1" away.

You can see here how I grinded the cut off sections more rounded after I altered them. I made sure that the washers were installed flat onto the surface area and that I grinded around them not touching them or the area under them. This is a good reference when cutting off the ears.

Here's a link that may provide some useful info. AndyZ28 also offers a 1LE CD (mentioned in this month's Chevy High Performance). The mod is an easy matter as RTFC mentions. The true 1LE spindle hasn't been availabe from GM for some time.

Are you sure that 1LE used 3/8"-24 UNF?
Just that when I did the conversion I did it to M12 according to the instructions that came with the spohn 13" pro series kit, which I thought used the same 1LE spindle mod.
Just curious, as it probably doesn't matter much as long as you have the bolts to match the threaded hole you make. Probably just an oddity with the pro series kit, but thought I'd ask.
Simon.
