good old hole in the hood
I am considering putting a nice big hole in my hood so I can fit a decent sized air cleaner on top of my performer rpm intake.
Two worries:
1. I own an 84 camaro with the indent things in the hood *not the louvers*
2. Is that a bad thing if im driving around with the air filter popping out of the hood and it starts to rain? As far as im knowledged, you do NOT want water going into your intake.
Currently the way ive accomplished gaining hood clearance is taking a 10x2? inch air cleaner and smashing it down, I'd say its about 1 inch from top to bottom now *yeah i know, devestating to my air flow* but at least it fits.
I would love to put a huge air filter on top but I cant because I cant afford a cowl hood. I would buy one of those nifty cowl scoops but I have those indent things on my hood and that would look really weird and be somewhat diffucult to fabricate.

haha, forgot to ask the main question...
Is putting a hole in my hood a bad idea if its my daily driver *even during the winter.. i know, kill me now*
im mainly afraid of the water problem.

I would think it wouldn't be a great idea for a daily driver in Michigan. You should probably look into a cowl hood. That's just my .02 though. I'm sure someone else will chime in too

wow, that made me laugh pretty hard.
I cant figure out any other way to gain hood clearance. Im afraid of buying a drop base air cleaner and for some stupid reason it not fit.
its just that a cowl hoods so expensive that im looking into cheap alternatives

Doesnt look too bad on a mustang. I've seen it done on old camaros too, but they were show cars.

Dont do it, get a hood even if you gotta save for a freakin year. You gotta drive it not us, all I can see is massive problems from the elements and a big ugly hole in your hood. If it were a blower you were trying to fit I would say cut it but not for a damn air cleaner

i was joking about not being able to beat my dads 3.8L mustang.
With the new intake manifold but with the squished air filter I think ill get maybe 10+ hp over stock, but with new intake + nice air filter i should see close to 30+ *im assuming*
I cant wait to actually be able to drive my car once again.
*engine hasnt been re-assembled yet*

I have cut a hole in the hood of a '73 Linc., the only reason being it was going to be in an endo race and no one gave a damn. We ended up painting it with a roller, I had fun doing it, it was a good laugh.

Do it! you will end up with free water injection system when it rains! Which will decrease spark knock, so you will be able to give the engine more timing, and even more power!

If it means anything to you, Im selling a 4" cowl that I was going to put on my 87. It's brand new, I bought it from Summit Racing for $110.00, i'll let it go for $80.00. If you're thinking about cutting a hole already, heres your cheaper alternative to buying a cowl hood.

oh damn, how wide is that? will it cover the louver things?
I was afraid of buying one because I didnt think it would cover the louvers and it would look really weird.
But judging by that picture it seems like it would.
im highly interested, allthough I wouldnt have the money soon, I would want to buy it. Stupid me and not having a job.
Once I get my car running *should be tonight* then ill be out looking for a job

Well, its fiberglass - got it at summit racing, like I said. Its 43 inches long and 28 inches wide, im pretty sure it will cover the louvers.

Thats a link for the EXACT scoop you would get from me (HRD-1107 the first one in the list), only im selling it for like 30 dollars less, or maybe even more. I was going to use it on my hood but then someone gave me an incredible offer on a different hood (not cowl). So its been sitting around collecting the dust that you see in that picture. I have another picture here from the side.
Im not really pressing to sell it, so i'll probably have it for a while. If you want to work something out, we can chat about it.

well an air cleaner sticking through the hood don't look so bad to me, but here's the prob.
I'm pretty sure all V-8 third gens had the engines offset to pass side alittle. Atleast the 4 I have worked with was.
That means your hole will not be in the center of the hood. That's what will look ugly.
Nothing worse looking than an off center hole in a hood.
I cut a 14" hole in mine to fit my intake, carb, air cleaner package just for the time being, untill I can save to get a glass hood, but I also bought a cheap scoop and rivited it over the air cleaner and hole.
Here's some pics of mine.. 1st one is with my temp small air cleaner (I run a 10" x 3.75" tall one), one in 1st pic is only 2" tall

yeah the picture of the mustang, his engine was offset too.
I might just do it for temp use
what did you do about rain?

Here's what I done about rain, and to cover up hole..
Rivited on cheap scoop
I also made this a real cold air setup, by making an air pan rivited to bottom of my air cleaner, that seals to bottom of hood.
That away only outside air from scoop can get into my engine.

He is right..all third gens engines are set to the pass. side of center of the car. I had the hole cut in the hood and all put together, and realized that the blower was not sitting center with the car. It made the car look like it was wrecked or twisted frame. Solution: tube frame and centered engine with car.

WaaX... No, if any water ever makes it to the air cleaner, it won't be much, and there's no way the carb will beable to suck rain mist through the air cleaner. I drove in down pours almost too hard to see where your going, and not 1 drop of water ever make it into my air pan.
No worries about hydro lock with this set up. It takes an awful lot of water to hydro lock an engine.
Heck I "steam clean" the carbon off my valves and all by misting some water down the carb with it running about once every 4-6 mo. That's an old trick to clean an engine. It works better than any of that stuff you buy and pour in your fuel.
92Transam.... Yeah I got pics of the air pan. It was cheap and simple to make.
I bought a 20 gal. round rope handle utility tub 21.5'' x 17'' at the family dollar store for $5.35
6' long foam pvc pipe insulation at home depot for under $2.00
Cut my hole out in hood with a jig saw, put air cleaner bottom on carb, measured from bottom of air cleaner to bottom of hood through my hole. Then measured my utility tub from bottom up to the measurement I got off my car, marked it, then cut it off there. Centered my air cleaner bottom in the cut off utility tub, and traced the carb throat opening of air cleaner onto utility tub. Then cut that out. Now I covered the bottom of my air cleaner in silicon chaulk. Nice thick layer, put it in the utility tub so the air cleaners throat was sticking through the hole I cut out in it. Then drilled 4 small holes through air cleaner bottom and utility tub, and put rivits in those holes. On top of the utility tub I placed the foam pipe insulation around the top. This makes a nice seal with the hood. Then just put it on carb like a norm. air cleaner. I seen a .18 sec drop the 1/4 mile ET time after time after I made this cold air pan
Psycho_91Camaro.... I got the edelbrock chrome 10" air cleaner with 2" filter from summit for under $20, threw the filter away and looked on K&N's site to find a 10" x 3, 3.5, 3.75, etc filter. I found K&N 1150 which is 10" x 3.7", and ordered it from summit for $36

P.S. Why didn't you cut up the yellow garbage can for your project?

What yellow garbage can, that little yellow bucket? That's not big around enough. I needed something atleast 15 or 16" in DIA. so it would seal on the outside of my 14" hole. Plus that's my rear end gear oil change bucket.
I really aint one that cares about looks. I'm after power, speed, and streetable use. So my air pan my not look the greatest but I knocked .18 sec off my E/T and picked up a solid 2 MPH through the 1/4 mile traps. So that was good enough for me. .18 sec, 2 MPH, about 2 hours total time and less than 10 bucks. Heck yeah
lol... I really don't have any probs with water getting in. The 14" hole in in middle of scoop, so the scoop really does a good job of covering it from rain. The back of the scoop has a norm. cowl over hang to it, and I put it as close to the windsheild as I could. That keeps water from getting in on the rear side, the front side will let water in, put only if i'm stopped going up a real step hill and it's pouring down. Other times when it's raining and I'm driving the metal under scoop dont even get wet, maybe an inch, to 1.5" inside front of scoop and that's it.
Even if water pooled in my air pan when driving, there's no way it could get sucked through a K&N filter and into the engine. I have about 11" of vac at idle, tooling around town I have about 22" of vac. A person can suck harder than 22". It would take close to 60" or better to pull water through an air filter
