the hood was light, probably made out of fiberglass, and had a cool butterfly mechanism that looks as if it were to be attached to the throttle of a tbi or carbureted engine

the roll cage

i couldnt imagine the trouble one would have to go through to get that sucker out... but these two things caught my attention, and i figured i'd post 'em up. also... no engine. this car seems to have been aimed toward performance at one time in its life, but there wasnt any engine... probably stripped of its parts long ago

a power bulge hood for you firebird guys out there. i asked the cashier about pricing, and he said 38 bucks for a hood.... seems like a pretty good deal to me. too bad i'm not looking for a hood, i would have pounced on this if i had come across it a year ago when my car was getting body work done on it

icebird, i have no idea about any of your questions... i just think that its an aftermarket hood, not stock, because i've never seen anything like it, it doesnt have merely a hole in the hood (the underside pic shows what looks like something that has been manufactured to seal to an air cleaner), and its light... probably made out of fiberglass

The hood is off of a Cross-Fire Injection 305 (LU5). The flaps are functional and open when WOT. It is actuated via vacuum and an electrical solenoid. The hood material is called Sheet Metal Composite, similar to fiberglass. It was only offered with the CFI Camaros of 1982-1983. The hood was also available in LG4 models and some L69s from 1982 (LG4s only, 1983 for L69s) to 1984. In mid-late 1984 the hoods were replaced with the standard sheetmetal hoods.

yup.. i had one of thoes hoods.

they are very brittle at their old age though, so you have to be careful when handling them.. and you need weaker gas shocks because the heavy gas ones for metal hoods would snap the hood....

Correct on all but the name of the material. SMC stands for sheet molded composite.

They're going in this Thursday when I fix my lifter tick.

if anyone does find those valve covers in a pick-a-part pull them out and I'll buy them from you. I've been looking for those valve covers for a long time now.

the front end of that camaro took a good hit, so i wouldnt have my hopes up on that grille...probably cracked

91FIREBIRDGT:
damn, i shoulda pulled 'em... oh well

leo037:
i was thinking about ways to get that sucker out.... guessing that its welded in, you would probably have a long day of sawing that sucker up where it was welded in...plus you would have to cut it at other points to get it out of the car. i would wonder if welding it back up would affect its structural integrity at all....

89V6FBIRD:
yep, i noticed that fiero... i looked at all of them! there was one that was smashed in pretty bad also......

I don't think the L69 Z's ever came with a SMC hood. I'm pretty sure by the time the L69 debuted all Z28s had steel hoods.

However, maybe a few did sneak out of the plant during the phase-out period of the LU5 engine and the introduction of the L69 in mid '83.

Also, did you know '84 was the only year you could get an auto trans. with the L69 engine? I never actually realized that before.

Hey 90firebird, love those junkyard pics. It's like browsing on Copart, but at the local PAP yards! How about taking pics of various 3rd gens everytime you go out to a yard and then post them here so we could see what's available?

-Mike

Mikos_89, i dont go to the junkyards all too often, but i figured i'd take my camera for the hell of it. if i go again, i'll be sure to post up some pics.... doesnt take much effort to snap a few pictures. i just hope the guys working at the yard dont mind... i didnt have any trouble that time, but if i'm constantly taking pictures they might object for some reason

JUNK YARDS

Just to be sure, these parts were taken from pick-a-part, not pick-your- part right? I'm familiar with the latter but don't really know where pick-a-part is. Any directions would be helpful.

take glenoaks to pendleton or something of that nature. turn left (if you are going northbound on glenoaks), and the parking lot will be on the right hand side after some auto glass places

And if you have a classic car, Memory Lane is just down the parking lot.

BTW, most yards won't let you take pictures.

Pick a part, pick a parts, pick a farts. pull it yourself, pull it now, pull it later, pull it never etc. etc...... It's all the same to me. Wrecking yards that allow you to look around and pull the parts yourself.

However, I can understand how someone could be confused if they wanted to go to that same exact yard as you did.

Yeah, I know what you mean about taking pictures at the yards. They usually have a sign there that states that no photos are permitted inside the yards. I guess these yards don't want to lose over 99.9% of their "workforce" if you ever decide someday to send any of the pics. to the immigration dept.

SMC hoods

I'm thinking of picking up that hood for my 305 TBI. I don't suppose it would taking too much modifying to get that hood to function in my car. Anybody here know anyone whos done this on their car?
