Moog rear springs, to high?

Installed Moog replacement rear springs and the rear looks a little high, how does it look to you guys? Will it settle over time?

That second picture sucks. It should settle, but I haven't a clue how much and how soon. Makes me wonder about buying Moog replacement springs over an Eibach kit.

Hey, what's Moog's website? Does Eibach make springs that are the stock height?

I had the Eibach pro kit, very nice, but with 4 people in the car it always hit the front wheel well, sorry about the second picture it was getting dark. The reason I changed to the moogs in the rear was because the car was about 1" higher on the left side (lopsided). I changed the rears first because they were the easiest. The fronts are the stock ones with about 50K on them. The car still does not sit perfectly level, I do not know if it ever did. On the front the drivers side is about 3/4" higher than the passenger side, I will replace the fronts next and check the isloaters, but the back does seem a little high. Thanks for the help. I will take another picture when light.

Curious, did you replace your rear isolators with new ones?

I tried the moog cargo coils. yikes !! it was like 3" too high !!!! they never settled. it was a fight to return them, and the bastard wouldn't take them back. I sold them to some guy who carried major heavy stuff, like a contractor tool box in his 3rd gen He loved them.

I have 1992 original RS rear springs with very low mileage on them for sale. they are the factory ride height when our cars were new. (one must consider all our cars are 11+ years old now)

I just looked and these are the Moog cargo coils, do they make just the regular ones? I guess I will check with my auto supply store again, this thing is just to high.

These things I bought were called Moog cargo springs, and like a dumbass I didn't figure out what the "cargo" meant until I installed them, I believe they are some kind of heavy duty helper spring, the car sat like a 4x4 truck. I removed them today and put the others back in, I will return them tomarrow and get the proper ones. I am doing this because the car sits 1"higher on the drivers side. Looks lopsided, but I believe the front springs might be throwing off the back. Any thoughts or expierences with this? Thanks.

Moog came out with the "Cargo Coils" about 15 years ago. There main purpose (the springs, that is) was to allow the car to sit at the PROPER ride height and as a load was increased in the car, the springs would stiffen up, if you will, and keep the car at the normal stock ride height.

They were very popular for the GM A and G body cars as those rear springs really sucked!

I'm looking for a good set of spring for my 89 bird that will put it at the correct height. Everywhere I've looked, all I see if LOWERING springs (heck, the car is low enough! I want to raise it back to normal!!!:hail:

Today I just installed the MOOG front springs and they are excellent. As for the backs those MOOG cargo springs just made the car to high. I will probably get the standard 1LE for the rear like the car came with. The new MOOG springs really stiffened the front back up, now the CD's skip again, nice.

can't get GM 1LE rear springs, and any 3rd gen rear springs for that matter. they'll give you 4th gen rear springs without telling you. all the 3rd gen part #'s been replaced with 4th gen stuff.

and yes I tried them, and they sit very high. I returned them taking a 20% restocking beating.

I still have that pair of original low mileage 1992 RS springs if anybody is interested.

Don't forget to make sure the rubber 'doughnut' dampener is set correctly and the end coil is properly set in the notch, too.

I'm with Larry here. I ordered "new" rear isolators like I stated earlier and I got the 4th gen ones. They just made the rear sit too high so I took them out and reinstalled the "old" ones, which are mostly steel anyway so I guess they'll never wear out.

Nitroburn, I'd install a set of these 4th gen rear spring isolators first. They're cheap and they will raise the rear end a bit, maybe just enough for you. Just a thought...

Hey, thanks Ed! You wouldn't happen to know the GM Part# for those isolators, do ya?

Thanks,

So is the proper rear spring part number from Moog 5665 (stock replacement for an 85 IROC), if not CC635 which are the cargo coils?

Sure...it's 10019587 per the CD rom list on the home page, but it MAY have been changed to a 4th gen number....I'm at work now and can't check my reciepts. I'll sell you mine if you want. I had them in for about 3 months but less than 300 miles...they're new as ever.

Does anyone have a close measurment on the distance between the ground and the top of the wheelwell on a typical Trans Am(91 Ta to be specific). The reason I ask is that my rear springs are pretty worn out and the car site pretty low. It looks good, but I need new springs. I think, for now, that I cannot put lowering springs in because it will sit too low for ground clearance reasons. I am afraid, however, that if I put Moog or 1LE springs in that it will jack the car up too much. Ultimately, I want to know if Eibach lowering springs will put the car at the same ride height that I have right now with fairly worn springs. If they will drop it at all from my already lower stance, then I can't do it. But if factory height springs will raise it up too much like "Benny's" Z28, then I don't want that either. Any ideas? Thanks

So, does anyone know who, if anyone, makes replacement WS6 springs, oem or aftermarket, and what the part #'s are?

I just went out and measured... stock tire size with 7/8 of a tank of fuel here's what I have on a flat, smooth surface (garage):

LF - 27"
RF - 27"
LR - 27"
RR - 27 1/4"

I'm guessing since my springs are weak as heck, the 1/4" difference in the rear is due to the almost full tank.

This is on an 89 Firbird LO3 (without the WS-6).

I just can't stand the rear-end bottoming out over the slightest dip or bump in the road!

Can some of you guys get some measuements from your cars? We probably would like to see the height from different models as well (ie: Base Models, 1LE/WS-6/Formulas, T/A's and Z's and IROCS).

Mine:

LF-271/2"
RF-27"

RR-263/4"
RL-271/2"

I have been told by numerious shops that some cars were not level from the factory, any thoughts? Does this sound like BS.

My car now has new springs and isolators look good, those above measurements are with the new springs.

What spring, shocks/struts, and isolators do you have? Brand, Part#'s, etc...

Also, I thought that the 1LE/WS6 package would set the car a little higher.

WIth those new springs in the back, do you bottom-out a lot or not as much anymore?

Thanks,
-Mike

Here is what I have:

front: new moog springs, don't have part number but you can get them at you local parts store, new KYB GR-2 struts, new lower ball joints, front end alignment.

back: springs out of '90 IROC with about 45K on them, new KYB GR-2 shocks.

KYG GR-2 struts and shocks cost me $210 for all, but this is in Hawaii, you can get them for cheaper where your at.

I do not bottom out at all.

The reason I changed was because I bought the car with Eibach pro kit, that kit is excellent but with 4 people in the car it would hit the front wheelwells on every bump, plus I wanted to put the car as close to stock as I could.

Future plans is to replace the rear springs with MOOGs but I am having a hard time finding the proper part number.

Do not get the MOOG rear "cargo" springs they will make the rear approx 3" to high.

I don't have the part number since I took them back but NAPA should be able to get them or some variation of them.
