Bizarre TPI starting problem..........

Here we go......

The car.....1989 GTA with a SuperRammed 355.

My car will not start when it is hot or warm. It will start when it has been sitting for a few hours. I have spark, the fuel rail has plenty of pressure and I have a brand new high torque starter. I have a new coil, wires, cap, rotor, module, alternator, fuel pump relay, battery and plugs. i even tried using a 1000 CA battery with no luck. The engine just cranks and cranks but it won't start. Now, here is the strange part........as soon as I throw a boost on it from another car, it starts. It fires right up as soon as you turn the key. The starter does seem to spin slightly faster when a boost is applied. Anyone care to make a guess as to what the problem might be? 3 different mechanics have looked at it and have been stumped. When it starts it runs great. Well, aside from the cam surge Thanks guys :hail:

check the amperage draw on the starter when cranking. maybe too high to allow the injectors to get the proper voltage to work. or not enough voltage to the ignition module. then when you jump it, you get plenty of voltage at that point.

the fact that you mentioned that it cranks a little slowly when hot, but is helped by a jump would lead me to believe that your base timing is a few degrees advanced. If you're stumped, you might want to try to set it back a little.

do you have headers. mine did that after i put headers on it, and then stopped after i put a starter heat blanket on it. heat soak in the solenoid caused it to not crank over right when warm. either get a blanket or a ministarter.

and yes, jumping the car off would help on mine sometimes for some reason, mustve gave it a little extra power to kick the starter over. thats what stumped me too, but ever since putting the heat blanket on, it hasnt happened once.
