Powertrax locker and swapping from 26 to 28 spline axles.. Have questions
I'm going to up grade my rear. I want to go with the powertrax locker, aftermarket 28 spline axles, alum. support cover, new axle bearings and seals.
The car is a 1988 camaro. 7.625" 10 bolt open, with 26 spline axles.
I talked to someone that knows about rear ends and he told me it would'nt work in my rear.
Here is what he said word for word..........
"You would have to swap the differential case to use the 28 spline axles
because the holes in the ends of the case are not large enough for the 28
spline axles. The inside of the case is also a little different, so the 28
spline locker kit would not fit in it. If you want to go with the 28 spline
axles then you would be better off to get the Eaton and do it right."
Is this true??????
I done the search on here and seen people have bought the SLP take off posi unit and swapped to 28 spline axles. Would useing a locker be any diff. as far as not being able to swap in 28 spline axles??
Has anybody on here done the 26 to 28 spline and locker setup?
Thanks for any help

When he said "case", what he was talking about was the "carrier", which is the piece the Powertrax goes into. The rear end "housing" )the part you can see when it's in the car) is the same for both sizes of axles.
You need to come up with a carrier out of a 90-up Camaro/Fiebird, or S truck, or any other vehicle that might have that rear end (can't think of any others, but just in case....) and use that along with the Powertrax and the new axles. Then it will work fine.
The SLP posi is (was) a complete carrier, so it replaces the part in question.
So, you're exactly right, and so is your rear end guy; it's merely a matter of confusion over which additional part you'll need.

RB83L69... Thanks bud, for clearing that up
To save time, money and trouble I might just keep 26 spline axles.
It just seems alot harder to find a set of good strong aftermarket 26 spline axles for the 7.625" 10 bolt F body rear ends.

There's a reason for that....
Rule 1 for making parts stronger: make them bigger.
It follows then that Step 1 to beef up the 10-bolt: get the bigger axles.
