Diagnostics system going crazy...

Per the instructions in the FAQ, I decided to lookup the diagnostics codes in my computer on my '89 IROC. I shorted terminals 5 and 6 with a paperclip and turned the key to the run position (didn't start it).

The first time I ever did it, the fuel pump came on and shut off normally. Then, the SES light blinked very intermittently and randomly for several seconds. It was the kind of non-rhythmic blinking that you might get if a dirty wire loose somewhere was being moved around. After a few seconds of that, I heard a buzzing sound (sort-of like a motor) comming from the engine compartment. It wasn't the fuel pump and I could hear it from the front of the engine (IAC valve, mabye?). That was constant for mabye a minute, then stopped. After all of that, the SES light stayed on solidly, and finally it started flashing a code 12. I waited for it to flash a code 12 ~6 times, and then I turned the key off.

I've tried running that test a couple of times since then, and the results don't seem all that consistient. I have not been able to get it to flash codes at me anymore (although I haven't waited as long as the first time), and it still does the weird random flashing thing. I have not heard that buzzing sound from the front engine since. And, I noticed that, sometimes, when the SES light is doing its weird flashing thing, hitting the gas will tun it off for a few seconds.

I should note that I bought this car with a Viper alarm system which, ironically, doesn't even work. I can tell from the wiring around the steering wheel and, generally, in many parts of the engine bay has been severely molested. I wouldn't be too surprised if some of that has to do with the problem I'm having now, but I'm curious to know if anybody else has seen something like this before...

Thanks

Figured why it was crazy...

The ECM was bad. Bought a new one, popped it in, and all-the-sudden my car works. Not a bad fix for a car that hasn't been on the road for a year...
