Targa Top Part 1........

Well while in the middle of sanding down the 92 Z for paint, and working on the 91 vert for a 92 wing. I said What the hell....

I bet it was only 20 spot welds that holds the bar in.

I have Welded in sub frames and I'll tell your right now You need a little more... Granted if I have the car on all 4 jack stands level i can pull 2 of em and the car will balance corner to coener ok. Once I poped that top bar out You can feel the car give a little. Not mutch but enough.. id say Subframes and at least a 4point bar.

ok enough BSing here are more pic's
http://www.cecoatings.com/images/92Z/Targatop/

Kinda ****ty I'll bet better ones out in the sun.

dono.... I picked up a 91 Vert RS Im redoing now. I was looking for a fender for the 92 in a local Junk Yard that has tons of 3rdGens. and the guy has a 92 RS perfect fenders but wanted $100 and I only needed 1. So he said well I have a 91 vert over here with one fender left..

I looked at it and Said How much... He said $50. Im like No how much for the complete car. he said $750... I said $500 cash now.
He said $600 and its yours. Needless to say I have this vert Im building a 355 with twin turbos for now.
http://www.cecoatings.com/images/91vert/

I just felt like taking a break on the Vert and with all the targa top posts Said what the hell graped my drill and well you see the rest....

That is gonna be awsome! Your gonna be one of a kind locally and one of few nation wide for awhile. That is sweet! I would do this to mine, but I have the hardtop version. I think a targa top w/ a 12point cage would be great! Get some really nice racing seats and convert a 97 + firebird dash/ console and door panels and that would be one bad ride! Then paint hte roll bar same color as car. One bad ride indead! Oh, if you guys think I could pull off doing a targa top on a hardtop, let me know, im considering. But it might be better to wait for a t-top doner.

prob a fiberglass/kevlar mix. This is what a old camaro targa top looked like. Of corse Id deff. finish the inside so it didnt look all ****ty...

another thing Im doing is A local guy designed and makes a tubular support for targa top vettes for when the top is out. Its not to noticable when in if your not looking directally at it, and its deff. on my maybe to do list.

rolled it out to get a better pic of the top for those interested.

more at http://www.cecoatings.com/images/92Z/Targatop

The reason its so low is..

I pulled the hotchkis springs I had in my Z out and put em in the vert. Then Idesided to drop The Z back off the stands and roll it outside to get some pic's of the top and to finish sanding it down to get ready to paint. anyways...... damm is it low with no springs

Leave it like it is! You'd get a lot of attention.

Kidding

Actually painting it one of the two front colors would look real nice.

Wow. You really need something in there, rollcage or something. Maybe it's just me, but that second picture, it really looks like your car's sagging in the middle. The rear end looks angled upwards.

actually its not that bad. just the pic's.
the front clip is only setting on it. bot bloted on etc. gfx hood etc.
Cuz Im preping for paint. The car has SFC's and its still pritty stiff.
If I grab the front and push shake or what not The complete car will move etc.

either way Its still getting a 6point like this

Hmm, so it had some tiny play in it even with the sub frame connectors. Looks like I'll be making my targa frame after all, I think I will skip out on putting scf's on the car since I'm going to have the frame in the same spot as the sfc's.
Gosh I'm diying to start working on my Z already. I went to the j/y to put my rims on the car so it can be rolled around. I have to wait until they move 15 other cars to get it out
Funny thing after sitting in one spot with the t's off and no pass door for 5 years theres only a few spots that have rust under the floor boards.

I love that pic without the springs in. If it was about 1/2 an inch higher then that would be the perfect height.

No way man... I'll have to have a buddy who smokes come over and lay his pack on the side. There is like 1inch clearance un the SFC's and maybe a tad more on the k-member. I'll get a few more pic's. Im pullin it out to finish blasting the engine bay and do some more sanding.

TPl383,

It looks like you are making the ultimate 92Z if that is the case and you are a good welder I think there is one thing you could do that would make that car perfect. Do you or anyone else here think the 91-92 16" rims could be extended with another set of rims to be 17" rims? If that could be done I am sure there would be a lot of interest in these rims. Heck maybe even a company would start making them with the prototype wheels as a mold. But If you could do it then man would it be SWEET.

:hail: 91-92 Z rims

Why not add a set of Alston style subframe connectors? They mount on the inner subframe and do not interfere with standart SFC's. Hell, if the convertibles can do it with the ****ty ASC reinforcements, you should have no problem with 2 SFC's!

Here are 2 pics how the Alstons work...

Wow, That front clip looks familiar (Thats the one I sold to Rob a couple years ago off my 85Z parts car)

I cant wait to get my subframes so I can start work on my targa. So how exactly did you remove that center piece? Just drill out the spot welds or what?

TPI my only suggestion to when ya weld the cage in. Put the bar ya took out back in place and tack weld it in there. Then install the cage. I think by doing that, ya might keep everything tied and lined up better.

You can use a sawzall or you could even use a chizel to break the spot welds. I would just use a sawzall, mainly cause I plan on adding another locking mechanism in the center of the top to help keep it sealed good and not catch any air and fly off.

If you just drill out all the spot weld your fine. 1 cut up front with a jig saw. When you start you will find out.

I pulled the trim outa my vert and the pillers are identical. You can see where the vert has a little piece rivited in to cober up the spot the T- bar was. Use convertable weather striping and our and your all set.

Kat, as for puting the T-bar back in to line it all up better I plan on it but theres really no reason. The doors still line up and open close like day one. The T-tops still fit in as befor so Its not really a huge factor.

As said befor The Only reason I belive I felt a little shift is I had the Car up on 4jack stands about 3ft High when I desided to do this and I didnt have my rims/springs or jack handy to drop the car back down 1st. (rims/spring were on/in the Vert)

Hopefully I make a drive down to summit racing come monday and pick up the cage and H-pipe for the car.

Doesent an 8 point cage kind of defeat the whole purpose of a targe top?

Nope your thinking 10/12 point with the halo

6/8 is just the hoop, back bars, side bars and the cross car and hump bars

Who all is doing this now?
85SportCoupeto89RS "82Z28" Pics www.cardomain.com/id/82TargaZ28
TPI383 "92Z28"
BigMikes92Z "Which car?"
LT1guy is doing it? "84TransAm"

Did I miss anyone?
Trailblaze is the only one that has finished the project that I know of, so that means we will still be a hand full

well my car is going to be undergoing a full slew of mods. basically a rebuilding of the entire car, sorta like chris seems to be doing. my motor has been losing its "oomph" lately so its time to do it and do it right.

Hres about the only before pics Trailblaze has posted for us, he also has a few of the body but I havent seen any close ups of his targa yet. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...0&pagenumber=6

Seeing his t'top pics makes the small spots of rusted out parts look much eaiser to fix.

That is exactly what we are planning for teh 82. Get all the supports in first. Ihad never seen the Aston Subframes before...I may have to check that out! Its better to have the frame be too stiff, esp since I will be putting in a 383 LT1...

Did I miss anyone?
Trailblaze is the only one that has finished the project that I know of, so that means we will still be a hand full
Ive been wanting to do it for a while now and finally this year its gonna get done. Ive been collecting all the knowledge I can and all the frame stiffining components also. This should be the year I get a lot more done on the IROC. Thats if this stupid weather gets any better.

Mine probably wont be for a little while. I'm not gonna pull the motor and everything until I have more work space and have at least some parts for the motor and chassis stiffening laying around.

Here are 2 pics how the Alstons work...
What does this do to gound clearance? I see it sits tight to the bottom of the car where the floor pan is...I just wonder cause my 82 is going to have at least a 1.5 inch drop...then I plan to run dual exhaust out the side...hmmm that could be a prob...

Here is a shot of the old spohn rectangular SFC's
