There are two sets of wheels that I really like that are similar to that.
Racing Heart has a set (name escapes me right now and I can't seem to find any pics on the web)
and 5Zigen Hyper 5ZR's are VERY nice

just to make sure...
if i wanted to pick up a set of new rims that are 17x8 i would go with:
4.5 bolt circle
5.5 backspacing all the way around
275/40 tires
that all sound right? Or would i want to use a different setup?

haha, ok kandied
So for a 17 inch wheel, in your opinion...
1.what would be a good width for the tire? 8/9/9.5?
2. stock offset is equal to what? What would be best backspaing?
3. With a wider rim would i bump up to 275 tire or something? I dont exactly know a lot about wheel/tire fitting.
4. Where do you think i would run into rubbing problems?

Honestly on not a fan of much aftermarket wheels especially the non stock looking ones. I do like some aftermarket ones but usually not the ones like youve pictured. I think those look better on newer t/as and camaros. But thats my opinion.

use a tire calculator to find out what the best size for your wheel choice would be. just do a search and it should come up. there is one on a miata site that works quite well but i no longer have the link.
as far as offset, well that depends on how wide you go. i'm extremely happy with my 4.75 18x8 front wheel and where it sits...if your going to go wider the 8" in the front you will need to adjust accordingly.
i'm also extremely happy with my 6.75 10" 18x8 rear wheel as with these offsets the wheels are right about stock location so i can have my car lowered and i can take turns without rubbing. however for the rear to fit there is some slight modifying.
i believe crazyhawaiian has 18x9.5 with a 5.75 backspacing and his sits perfect as well. do a search and you'll find all your answers for yourself. it's a much better way to go about it.
as far as tires you should go with the proper size. a 245 is the right width for a 8" wheel you go up 10 for every .5 the width gets. so a 255 would be good for a 8.5 profile works the same way only you downsize for the larger the rim. a good example here is on my z06 10.5's i was running an 295/35/18 and it was perfect. on my 10's i'm running a 285/35/18 and it's perfect. i have a bfg drag radial in a 295/35/18 that i'm making fit on my 10" rim and the sidewalls slightly buldge which caused some fender rubbing over bumps and turns.

i never know how those numbers worked before. Thanks a lot. I'll go hit a search for the wheel spacing and what not.
