OK, here's my experience with the crackling or popping noise. First off, cat is hollowed out. It did crackle when I had my smog pump hooked up, but when took the belt (to the pump off), it made no crackling whatsoever. When it was time for inspection, I put the belt back on, it went back to crackling, and once again, when I took it off, it no longer crackled. Now it does a little bit since I do have a small exhaust leak. All this has led me to believe that any outside air (with oxygen) causes the popping due to burning unburnt fuel that has gotten into the exhaust. This makes sense to me that this is the purpose of the smog pump... to lower emissions by completely burning all the fuel before it goes out the tailpipe. Now I don't know if this is a correct assumption, but just what I have reasoned.
