? about SLP Posi vs. 87 factory Posi

Im in the process right now of switching out my 2.73 factory posi rear end to a 3.42 gears SLP Torsen Posi rear.

I have both rear ends sitting beside each other on the garage floor. My question is,

When I turn an axle on the 87 factory posi both axles turn in the same direction along with the yoke.........but when I turn an axle on the SLP posi they turn in opposite directions and the yoke doesnt move.....but when I turn the yoke on the SLP posi then both axles turn in the same direction....why is that?

is it because the SLP unit is not locked?

I just find that ODD!.......

intresting question, I have one and it does the same thing.. it only has about 4k on it.. it lays 2 strips down at will, but the tires turn in opposite directions if i turn just one wheel but if i turn the yoke they spin the same direction.. maybe someone can clear this up for us?

The factory limited slip rear uses clutch disks to lock the axles together. There is a certain amount of preload that is applied to each axle, which when you turn around a corner with your 3500 lb car is enough to break the hold that the clutches have. This allows the differential action to take place.

The torsion is 100% gear type carrier. When input is recieved from the pinion gear, both side gears are driven. When the input (or uneven output) shifts to either wheel, the differential action occures, allowing the wheels to spin at different speeds without binding. When you spin one of the wheels, it is probably just passing the torque directly thru the carrier to the other wheel. Powerflow operates like electricity in the sense that it will follow the path of least resistance. That's why you get the one wheel squeal with an open diff.

Does that help any, or not make any sense at all. This is one of those things that I understand in my head, but I'm not all that great at explaining

A Torsen axle doesn't engage both axles until there is some relative motion and resultant force differential between the two sides. Maybe this will help describe the action:
