Jet Q-Jet = Thumbs down
I just want to give a heads up to any members here who are considering Jet for a carb. Here is an analysis of what I have found with my Stage II non cc Q-Jet. This was ordered straight through Jet a little over a year ago. I have recently taken the Q-Jet off to play with a Holley and have found a few more problems. Here are some observations of problems this carb had in order of discovery:
1) One of the primary metering rods was missing its tip. Looks like it was replated in that condition too. Pretty sad that it wasn't even noticed upon assembly.
2) Accelerator pump seal torn. I found this out after a few days of tuning, but I can't imagine how it could fail that fast. This had to be another oversight when the carb was assembled.
3) The supposed "adjustable" part throttle "feature" was so poorly adjusted that my metering rods never could lower enough to get anywhere close to the cruise stage of the rods. And remember that I didn't even have a rod tip on one of my rods at the start too! I think this feature is a marketing gimick anyway. It is for being lazy and not changing metering rods like you are supposed to.
4) The idle feed tubes were mismatched! One side was drilled oversize like I would expect with my engine, but the other was not. I guess the guy got distracted and never got to it.
Good thing I have the special extra long drill bits or else I never would have found out about this one!
Most people can't even check that.
5) One of the tips of the idle mix screws has a few mm broken off.
I have one positive thing to say about the carb. It does look nice, when it comes to the replating. But to have this many problems on a $360 carb is absurd. Stay far, far away from Jet carbs.
