not the same speedo gear question
Alright I've done the search button a dozen times. I'll spell it out really simple. I have 91 t-5 with factory 3.08, and 235/55/16 tires. So the speedo gears are 9 and 22. I am putting a 3.42 rear in and I currently have 225/60/16 tires. Which would mean I need a 23 tooth gear with the factory 9 tooth. However I can't find a 23 tooth gear part number, and I don't think it exists. Also in the summer I plan on changing to 245/50/16 which would need a 24 tooth gear, which I also think does not exist. I have changed the gear that rides on the mainshaft in a 700r4, however I have read that changing the gear on the mainshaft of a t-5 is much harder.
1. Do 23 or 24 tooth speedo gears exist for the t-5 and part numbers?
2. Is there a guide for installing the speedo gear that rides the mainshaft of the t-5? Considering I'll probably have to go to 7 tooth gear.
3. Is my math right?
4. Can we eventually get a simple sticky with all the colors, part numbers, and teeth for both the 700r4 and t-5?

1. Yes. I can get them; I just haven't done much in sales lately because my new job is differently located.

Sending PM to you jmd, the problem with the faq is it only lists 700r4 part numbers.

Don't you mean a 6, 7 or 8 tooth one?

I have read on TGO that cars with 235/55/16, t-5, and 3.08, had a 9/22 combo (88-92 or so on years electric speedo) Is the drive gear that hard to change or is it as easy as a 700r4?
I used the hanlon calculator and other basic math to determine what I needed with 9 tooth drive gear

I just used the Hanlon calculator...and it doesn't mention a 9 tooth gear!
That is my point...
Are you sure that you are right about that?
Better yet...does GM make a 9 tooth gear? I hadn't heard of that...

Well, I don't know of a 23-tooth driven gear for a T-5 VSS.
So your only bet is the 7/19 combination. That would get you close enough (<5% off).
Oooooorrrrrrr ... if you can locate the 8-tooth drive gear (#6261783), get a 21-tooth driven gear (#14090594) and that will get you as close at 1% off on your speedo.
Hope this helps.

Is changing speedo gears in a T-5 the same as a 700r4? Pop the tailshaft off remove the pin hammer the old gear off and hammer the new one on? If so its not a big deal. I'm going to down with these part numbers to my local gm tonight. I would have them look them up however they aren't that bright.

BigBabyLou, your 20 and 21 tooth part numbers aren't showing up in GMparts direct. If I have a chance I'll go down to GM later and ask them. I also email GMparts direct, however I doubt they will be of much help.

You could also try calling 1-888-877-1008 (Performance Automotive and Transmission Center - Speedometer Calibration Center). If they can't find it by the part #, describe the gears to them and they should be able to find them for you.

Xrist, that sucks.
I have one more idea. I'll PM you contact info on a great local guy (GM dealership tech) who knows a lot about these. Call him and if he can't help you, we gotta make you the gears ourselves.

Also too bad that I have the 8746 and I can't edit the speedometer ratio in there.

Finally got to calling BigBabyLou's guy, he came up with the best set being a 7/19, however there appears to be a "Brown" 18 tooth that was used in some fourth gens that should theoretically work, but we were time limited and it wasn't turning up easily.
Some one hack the 8746 to alter the speedo.

Well the rear got put on hold when the transmission started having problems. I'm still going to get these problem solved though by summers end. I almost certain that I am going to run a 255/50/16 tire too. That would leave me the combinations of 7/19, 7/18, 8/21, and 9/24. Which would only really leave the 7/19 combo. Too bad they didn't make more speedo gears.

Just an update and bringing another post back from the dead. The rear is scheduled to be installed over thanksgiving break, however I am still speedo gearless. I had a bunch of clutch problems which led me to an adjustable ball stud, that is why I am trying to avoid pulling the transmission. I already have the 255/50/16 tires, so all I am waiting on is the 24 tooth electronic speedo driven speedo gear.

Will give $5 paypal cash to anyone than can find me a 24 tooth driven electronic speedo gear. I've been looking would any 700r4 or Ford gears work? I just don't want to pull that transmission again to put speedo gears in. It took miracles to work this time.
