What is the true difference?

My GTA has option code gw6 = 3.27 rear axle

What is the difference between this and the G92 Option.

G92 is a performance axle package made up of GW6. The performance axle came in different flavors depending on the year and tranny type. In certain years, ordering G92 got you a 3.27 (auto) or 3.45 (manual) gear. In later years, G92 got you 3.23 or 3.42 gears. You didn't just order the car and specify the gearing like in years before. A 2.77 geared car could be upgraded to a 3.27 by ordering option G92.

Engine: 5.1L TPI, 5.0L TPI
Transmission: 700R4, M5
Axle/Gears: Sag 3.73, B&W 3.45
Pontiac did not use the G92 option like Chevrolet. from 87-90 All Formula's and GTA's with the M5/LB9 or the L98 appear to have the necessary stuff to be considered a G92 car. Starting in 1991 Pontiac had the R6P option which is the "performance enhancement group" and basically the option was for the Trans AM only as it was standard on the Formula and GTA with the L98 or the LB9/MM5...

According to dealer order sheets:
91 & 92 the R6P included "Oil Cooler, Dual converter, (disc brakes were a seperate option) and the performance axel. It was an OPTION on the Trans Am with the MM5 trans and the LB9 and it was REQUIRED on the Formula & GTA with the LB9/MM5 and the Formula, GTA and Trans Am with the B2L (L98).
