The mod fest will be in the back of...

Sport Performance Auto Body
650 Stafford Run Rd.
Stafford Tx 77074

Moderator's note: This is a "merged and edited" thread from the monthly meet thread, so we could get all th info in one thread and get a better idea who is interested.

In another thread someone suggested a body work instruction day. Is anyone else interested in that?

If so I might be able to work something out.

January Pre-Monthly Meet MOD FEST

On the same day as the January meet, only a couple of miles away (3 lights), there will a mod fest at my shop (directions will be posted later). I am guessing that the Mod-Fest will start at 12:00 Noon and go until 5:00 PM. Then we can all drive the 2 miles to the meet.

We will have electricity, compressed air and a small lift available. An experienced body man from the adjacent body shop has volunteered his time in order to show people how to do their own body work.

So I need people to sign up in one of three catagories:

1) You have something you want to do to your car.
Who are you?
What do you want to do?
What kind of help do you think you will need?
What, if any, special tools will you need?

Please bring your own tools if possible, otherwise there will not be enough to go around.

2) You want to learn how to do body work on your car.

**** What kind of work do you want to do?****

I will check with the body man to get a list of supplies that you will need for your project.

3) You want to help with someone elses project.
Which project do you want to help with and what kind of help can you offer?

So far:
Catagory 1 (Mods and mechanical work);
Me (ESC) I will be replacing the rod ends on my trailing arms and pan-hard rod. I will need someone to hold a big wrench while I loosen the 3/4" bolts that hold my suspension together.

Johnny (a friend of mine) He is trying to finish up a TPI conversion on his '81 Corvette. He could use the help of anyone who is familure with TPI wiring harnesses and especially tuning.

???Who's next????

Catagory 2 (Body Repair 101);
plndtx
Wicked3rdgens - Poping dents, sanding, re-aligning
Red92RS (?)
aldixie - filling, preping and the best way to prep the front nose as it has various cracks in the paint
DENN_SHAH - remove the T-top roof thats on the car & replace it with a hard top
zap89 - aligning my hood and getting a small dent fixed
Barry85IROC - fix a dent

Catagory 3 (Volunteers)
Me (ESC), I'll help with what ever I can
Zap - Bringing Monster Torque Wrench
Wicked3rdgens
DENN_SHAH - Help with the '81 'Vette TPI conversion
plndtx - Hold a big wrench while I beat up my(ESC) car with Zap's Monster torque wrench
Barry85Iroc - help with what ever

We were talking about the January meet, since it will be right down hte street from my shop, which is adjacent to the body shop.

If we wait until the February meet (uh, Zap where is February again?) it will be a lot longer commute, maybe on the opposite side of town. So it wouldn't really work very well on the same day as the meet.

esc,
I would be interested in any instructions on body work that you are willing to give.

If anybody else has any projects they need a hand with let me know.

I just bought my '92 Heritage z28 convertible and I have a little $$ left over for a few bolt-ons. However, I have never installed any of the usual bolt-ons and would like to assist someone else before I attempt it on my own. It is too nice of a car to screw it up.

I will try to attend the January meet.

While I do have a few body work questions, I will not be doing any work that day on site.

I would be very interested in an "overview" of doing some work such as spot painting prepartion and actual paint application- -do's and dont's.

I will also help anybody do what I am capable of physically, which is not much since I am always fighting a bad back and 2 artificial hips.

I'm interested in repairing a couple of bad scratches, realigning and getting ready for some paint.

You said for us to bring our own tools, well don't know much about this stuff so I don't have any tools and have no idea what to get. I do have a BFH though

Seriously aligning my hood and getting a small dent fixed are my real concerns.

I'm definately up for body repair, filling preping etc.

Need to get my car repainted this year and want to do the prep work myself. The maaco paint job that someone had performed on it beforehand is chipping and peeling away. Also need to know the best way to prep the front nose as it has various cracks in the paint.

About 250 psi, with a 500 gallon tank and (I think) a 20 hp motor. I have a regulator installed so I normally operate at about 120 psi. The compressor is so big that it has to live in it's own building.

Hey Eric,

Is there anybody in that complex U are in that does exhaust?

I finally got th new Y-pipe from Hooker, and I was going to have Owen at ARD do it, but he has not answered my email and from what I understand he is pretty loaded up at the moment.

I actually have a 4ft piece of 3" pipe and some butt clamps (huh, huh -- Hey Beavis, he said butt!) and could do it myself, but would prefer to have the adjoining pipes stretched so they overlap like normal and welded in place.

I was considerig doing it with what I have so I can drive it to the muffler shop and get them to do it right, but am open to alternatives.

Does anybody have a 3" pipe stretcher?

Any suggestions?

Uh, I do!

Actuall I can use the pipe stretcher/bender in one of the adjacent shops. I also have Johnnies (my friend with the '81 'Vette) arc welder and I've been looking for something to try it on....

If you REALLY want to pay some to do it, yes there are a couple of places.

No, I do NOT WANT to pay somebody else to do it. If U have a stretcher and U are comfortable welding up the pipe yourself, maybe we have another project to add the Mod list! Theoritically it should take an hour or 2 at most?

How good/bad is your welding?

Have anything we could use to cut old pipe past the cat, before/after we unbolt the 2 bolts on each side where they bolt to the headers? torch--saws all....anything?

If we don't run in to any problems we might do it in 1 hour.

My welding...well it's been a while, but I have welded up a complete exhaust system for MY car on 2 seperate occasions (many years apart, both systems held up nicely). I have some scrap to practice on, then you can decide for yourself if my welding is good enough.

I have an 18V Sawz-all type thing that should cut through it like butter.

Well, if U didn't set your car on fire, that's good enough for me

Do U want to wait til the mod fest or since I'm so close, U want to maybe "GET-R-DONE" before, so we can help out the others that will be there. If U want to, we could do it this weekend or next weekend and probably do your front end at the same time?

I can probably do it next weekend. It will have to be on Saturday. The main shop is closed on Sunday so we couldn't get in to use their bender/expander thing. I'll check during the week and make sure I have everything lined up. If we can to my rod-ends the same day, that would be great.

Eric,

What time are we gonna meet at your shop for the Mod Fest?

Can U refresh my memory with an address (maybe even a full address so I can do a Mapblast?) and some directions. Is there a phone number I can call when I get lost?

I'll probably be there a little earlier, but I think that 12:00 Noon would be a good time to get started.

I'll be talking to the body man this week to confirm.

I spoke to the "body guy" today (his name is actually Waine).

I showed him the list and he said it looked good except for the top-swap, that won't quite fit in to the "Body Repair 101" classification.

He will prepare a supplies list that I will post in a day or two.

He also showed me this cool thing they use for pulling dents. It welds a "nail" on to the body then they pull on the "nail" with a slide hammer. Just break the "nail" off when you are finished. It is a lot better than the old method of drilling holes. So if you have some dents, there is a REAL good chance that we will get them pulled out for you. So don't be late.

i know a top swap won't be a quick question & answer deal for someone who has never done that kind of work before, but i used to work at a frame & body shop & i did bigger jobs than that
when i was there, it was just a really long time ago, so i know there are things i have forgotten. i need more of a where/how much to support the car before cutting & best place to cut the top at, the rest im pretty sure i still remember.

Well, my body guy said that you would be a lot better off asking someone who specializes in that sort of thing. He may be able to give you some helpfull advice, but that isn't his specialty. But, hey, he'll be happy to talk to you about it.

Just a reminder...

Tomorrow at Noon. I'll probably be ther a little earilier.

I'll have a hot grill and some dogs and cold water for snacks. If you want anything special to eat or drink BYO(B?).

I also went and picked up a few tools for working on my car. A 1 1/8" wrench and a 1 1/8" 3/4" drive socket. So I should be able to get my rod ends off.

Craig, please bring that super-heavy-duty impact wrench of yours. I'm also crossing my fingers that I'll be able to do an actual mod (not just a repair), if I can round up the parts in time.

I am bringing the super duper, whammer jammer 1/2" "Earthquake" impact as well as my 3/8" air ratchet. My arms got tired hanging upside down last week just doing those few bolts. (I'm spoiled using air tools all the time!)

The meet will NOT be cancelled--rain or shine it will be as scheduled.

The mod fest, I'd say play it by ear--U know how weather can be in Hou. It can be pouring in some parts of town and no rain whatsoever in other parts.

GM door spring compressor

Hi Guy's,

Does anyone have a GM door spring compressor. I know its late in the day. If they do and could bring it along, as I have some lower door pins to replace.

Thanks,

Alex

I used to--I'll look.

U can use a flat tip screwdriver--I've done it many many many times when I used to do car stereos. Most auto parts shops cary them--usually only a few dollars

It's just water!

Besides most of us probably need to wash our car anyway!

The mod fest will be in the back of...

Sport Performance Auto Body
650 Stafford Run Rd.
Stafford Tx 77074

Directions?

If you are heading S. on 59 take the Alt 90 (Main Street) exit. From here if you want to get the show, take the first right in to the paring lot. If you want to get to Hooteres, take the U-turn.

To get to the Mod-Fest turn Left on Alt-90. Go past the first light (Dulles) and turn right on the Second light, FM 1092 (Murphy Rd.).

Going S. on FM1092 (Murphy) pass the first light, Ave. E and turn Left at Stafford Run Rd.. It is about 200 yards past Ave. E. There is a FireStone on the corner.

Sport Performance is right next to the Firestone. Turn in the first driveway, go through the gate and all the way (past the dumpster) to the back, then turn right (yes you are still in the parking lot) and look for the F-Bodies. You're there!

No problem, happy to do it.

Also I want to say thanks to DENN_SHAH for figuring out what was going on with my friends '81 Vette TPI conversion. It was a VATS issue. In hind sight it seems perfectly obvious.

Mainly looked like a goverment job--Eric was changin out the trailing arms rod ends and we were all pretty much standing around watching. Lotta "bench racing", but an enjoyable time, especially after about beer thirty or so.

Not off hand, but if he took my advice probably a 180.

Also I could really use some info on that little anti-VATS circuit you were showing us.
