To Charge or not too???
To Charge or not too???
Hi..
I'm going threw some tough time about turbocharging my ride. Here is the story. I have a quick ride NA. But I want to know if it is worth putting twin turbos on it.
(The specs... are 383. zzx-9cam, miniram, trick flow heads) 1 5/8 headers.9.7 to one On auto.
My car dynoed at 451 horse at 6000RPM and 445 torque, (Using 24lb injectors and DFI) Very mild combo but it should hit low 12's to high 11,s
All on pump gas...
Know here is a question. Can I make more horse power on pump gas using twin Mitu. 16 (flow a max of 505 cfms each) turbos? As the car sits I can only get 8psi on the street due to my compression of 9.7 to one. Do you think this will be faster then my other combo on street gas?
Also if I used racing gas 114oct I can run about 14-16 psi. How much power doo you think I can make?
Know remember it will cost me about 2500 for my turbo project and I'm wondering if it is worth it?
Thanks,
Shane

Whats the big deal about twin turbos? I dont see why everyone is so big on TWIN's.

Buy a single turbo, build some headers, and there you go. Plenty of power, MUCH less room taken up.
That is what Im in the middle of doing.

Guildo,
I wish I had room for a single. I have a Brand new turbo huge 3.5 inlet and 3.5 exhaust and a 2.5 compresser outlet pipe. The thing flows next to 1800cfms! This is the turbo that I need in my car. But the only problem is that I don't have an turbo manifolds for it. And I don't have a only have an Arc welder right know. Also I'm not an expreinse welder either!
Can I use an Arc welder to make a turbo make my manifold? Or what type would I need?
Here is the sitation. First off. If you do a twin turbos whould be REALLY easy. First of by 2 GM cast iron RAM stlye exhaust manifold. Cost 100!
Cut the the exhaust manifold off by 2 inchs. and weld on turbo flange.
Do the same with the other one.
First off those manifold flow really close numbers to headser! Second its thick cast iron and will not crack like headers!
This way I do very little welding and have more time to spen on other things.
Next bolt the watercooled 16g Mitus. turbos to the end of the exhaust manifold facing down. (the biggest cost here 600 apiece)
third install intercooler on above each tire fender! Run pipes to y splitter and then to intake.
3rd make make down pipes then attach to exhaust.
I've done this on a few 305's in the past(using cheap used twin 14g turbos). One was my cosin's car and the other was a freinds. Switched heads to a 76cc head which we got for a few bucks! COmpression was 8.7 and it ran 11psi on the street. Making Around 400 horse and 600 of torque!
Know if anyone needs help making one don't feel afraid to ask questions about the prohect!
or if your in the Chicago land area..I'd more then happey to help you out.
Providing you a heated garage! It's getting mighty cold here latley!
My question is it worth the time and money it on my car to go go turbo?

Total cost of pic: $350
Total cost: $0 (im lucky here I guess since I can CNC flanges from work)
and I will end up with this:

Dang! That is a nice set up! I'm What size of turbo is that?
And where can get some friends like yours!! And where do you work? That you get cc flanges!
Didn't you at one time have a vortex supercharger on your car? Why are you switching?

Feel like I can make more power with a turbo. And its trick. And the power is smoother and easier on the engine.
Nothing wrong with vortech.

I have an ad in the classifides for it.
S-Trim kit for 88-92TPI. upgraded with 8 rib pullies and vortech racing bypass valve (blue one). Under 5k miles.
$2700.
As far as adapting it to a carb... well you would have to find some way of sealing the discharge to the top of the carb, and I think there are things you have to do toa carb to make it a blow through setup. I dont know what though.
