I am going to be replacing my Power Steering Box soon, and I would like to go ahead use some braided stainless hose with it. Do any of the companys that make braided stainless hose have a ready made product that will fit right in, or is this something I'm going to have to make myself? I'm assuming I'll have to make it myself since we have that little presure sensor sticking off the side of the hose. Can anyone tell me what size fittings I'll need and where a good place to buy them is. Thanks!

 

You have to use teflon lined brake hose and most of the braded hose companys make some. Jegs and Summit have it in stock The power steering boxes sometimes use special fittings so you might want to talk to a tech specialest to tell you which ones you will need to get a proper fit.

 

Well, I knew I should have replaced that hose, now its leaking like a sieve I'm really not interested in building my own hoses, as these are kind of major hoses and I'd hate to screw one up. Anyone else have any leads? Thanks!

Any idea what size fittings I'll need? Also, I've got some kind of pressure sensor on the high pressure hose. I dont think its really necessary since I didnt even get a warning that I had no fluid left until my car was making noises while turning. Is it safe to eliminate that sensor?

 

I believe it's an A/C cutoff switch that you see on the P/S line.

 

Why does the Power Steering System have an AC Cutoff switch in it?

 

The switch on the one power steering line is for upping the idle if steering while not moving.(it's a pressure switch)
I built braided stainless teflon lined hoses for mine and never put the pressure switch back in.
Didn't notice any difference with it out.
If you want to keep it, the way I was going to do it,was to get a -6AN pressure gauge adapter (-6AN on both sides and 1/8"NPT in the middle )and plug the 1/8"NPT, drill the other side and tap it with the correct tap (I think it was 10mm,I'll check)
Other than -6AN hoses, you'll need the adapters for the hi pressure side of the pump and the steering box.
These are 18mm O-ring to -6AN.
Aeroquip, Earl's and Russell all make them.
Get steel fittings for all the hi pressure lines.
Aluminum's fine for the lo pressure.
Bought mine from Summit.

I too want to make this hoses, but im pretty inexperienced In car stuff, the only thing I had acomplish is changing the stock radiator (leaking) for an aluminium griffen and put a B&M transmission Cooler.

I dont have to much tools either (In the process of buying stuff).

So I readed your recomendations and got pretty lost on all the fittings that Summit have from Earl, also the hose to be used is the power steering hose (part #EAR-130606) is this correct?

Si if its possible you help to find the correct hose ends for both lines (one is the pressure line and the other is the return line?) I would really apreciate it.

 

Apparently, to cut off the A/C if you're turning the wheel while idling (PS fluid pressure).

This is from my old 84 Z, so it's not perfectly accurate, but just to show you what I mean.

Dang thats a large picture I ended up buying a hose at O'Rielly's. Forgot how much it cost now, but it wasnt cheap, prolly around 25 bucks I think. I bet I could have made my own hose using the parts listed above for that much, lol. The information you guys gave has helped a lot though. I do plan on eventually going with braided hoses, so I'll keep those part #'s handy, and I'll rip out that stupid switch, less wires to deal with Thanks!!

 

good chance you can take you ps lines to an industrial supplier and thay can make you new braided hoses, or some machine shops make hoses. having one made is way cheaper than using the ends from earls or russel.

if you cut the crimped ferrules off the pressure line and take it to one of those places, they can put the stainless hose on the stock hard lines, which dodges the whole fitting issue.

Earls recomend against using another fittings with their hoses. They do it for bussiness or for fitthings problems?

I would have no problem buying all the stuff from Summit (earls stuff) but im pretty lose with all the Hose ends.

Also I have no idea what size of hoses are used in our car.

For what I have readed the fuel lines are 6AN, the Brake lines are 3AN, the Power steering are 6AN, the water lines (dont have any idea), the heather hoses (I will eliminate the heater so I dont care). Is those sizes right?

We do that a lot at work if we need to have a hydraulic hose made for a repair.

We can get a hose made in a day or so, as opposed to waiting 3-4 days for the OEM supplier to send their hose. That's presuming that the part isn't placed on backorder.

 

So I should order just the power steering specific hose from earls and disconnect everything from my car and bring those to that kind of place. (Where they made hoses)
