Re: shifter polishing
Run to Autozone or maybe even a Lowes. Grab some 200 grit, 600, 1500, 2000. Simply start with the 200 and sand in one direction and once the surface looks evenly polished move to the next grit, etc, etc. When you get to the 2000 just spend an extra bit of time with it and it will start to mirror, apply some aluminum polish and it should look great. Thats what I did with my TPI plenum and it turned out like a mirror. Buffing with the polish can take some time so I used a small buffer.

Re: shifter polishing
I'm in the process of doing the same thing to my IROC wheels. I sanded the paint off with 220 grit then worked my way up to 320, 400, 800, 1000, 1500, and then 2000 (all wet) grit. When you get into the higher grits make sure you sand in the same direction. When you are finished hit it with a good polishing compound (I actually used 3M rubbing compound and then 3M Finess It II Finishing Material). I'm still early in the process with the wheels but it looks fantastic! I'm thinking that with one more hit with the compounds it will look similar to chrome. Worth all of the back-breaking work IMHO. Good luck!
