Car: 1988 Black GTA
Engine: 5.7L
Transmission: manual
Axle/Gears: 3.73
Rear Hatch Latch Stuck
Symptoms
Rear hatch not locking down.
Push latch button no clicks
visual- Reach hatch mechanism has retracted and not resurfaced.
Before i begin tearing **** apart rain you experience and knowledge on me.

Look down in the latch, you should see a little black switch the hatch striker would push when latched. Push that tab down and see if the motor runs.
Sometimes the pull down can move down without latching completely, or without moving all the way down to the reverse position, but far enough the striker won't latch. Pushing the tab sometimes is enough to run the assembly all the way down to where it clicks into reverse, then let it come back up and you can close the hatch.
I'm not saying thats whats happening, but its cheap and easy to try before tearing into it.
