opinion on AC
hey i am looking for some opinions on what i should do on my '87 IROC-Z-28. when i bought it the guy told me that the AC compressor clutch was bad. in the sale he included a whole compressor beacause he said he never got aroung to swaping the clutches. well i found out that you need to have a special puller to get the clutch off, so i my first option is just swaping the whole compressor w/the clutch.
(but what if the spare compressor is bad?)
second i could just buy a puller and switch the clutch
(but it also needs charged up)
that also got me thinking, IF there isn't enough freon (pressure) in the system the clutch will kick off and on constantly. but i can't afford to go out and charge the system just to find out it
Last i thought about swaping the compressor and converting to 134.
what are some suggestions? thanks

Well, you don't know if the spare compressor is worth it, but lets say the thing works. If this car is going to be a daily driver and you like A/C I say you convert it to 134 unless someone.....ahem.....misplaces a few of the older cans.

ok, what does it cost to convert to 134? and where is the best place to get a kit?
and what exactly are you refering about: misplacing a few of the older cans?

by misplacing cans he means that you shouldn't be able to buy the old R-12 stuff very cheaply and if someone has a stash sitting around you could score some freon from you would be better off converting to R-134.
If you are going to convert to R-134 the suggested parts to replace are the o-rings, the condenser, the dessicant dryer, orifice tube, and the compressor. Plus, you would need to flush the old lines out to be sure to get any old lubricant and posible metal shavings from your old compressor out of the lines. Lastly, you need to get the recommended lubricant and a few cans of R-134 freon. Think they are up to $10 a can at the auto part stores.
