I'm going to post this over at The Source Page too, but I thought I'd add it here as well. I've been getting a lot of requests for the paint code for the 1987-1992 GTA rims lately.

Today I conferred with my local PPG paint supplier and this is what we uncovered.....

The color is called Gold Poly and the GM color code is 52 with a WA listing of #9008.... the RPO list should read 52P on a GTA. For 1987-1991 GTAs, this code refers to the paint color of the wheels.... for 1992, the wheels' actual RPO code changed over to 52P while the black style was coded as PW7. The 1992 color is still the same as the earlier years.

The wheel color is listed in the latest PPG literature as a General Motors Commercial Color (????) instead of the previous GM Wheel Color designation.

The matching PPG number for this color is 3917. This number should be all you need to get the paint from PPG. It is available either in regular cans or in aerosol spray cans. For paint brands other than PPG, refer to the two correct GM codes listed above.

Great info! I'm hoping to get mine re-powder coated when I have them restored. Hey, letme know when you find a reproduction source for the bar code sticker that was on the rims when new too, ha! That would be sweet

BTW though, I thought there was a very slight difference in the color between the 87-89 and the 90-92 (or maybe it was 91-92) wheels. I'm not saying a different paint code but just that I've heard ALLOT of ppl comment that side by side the color is a tiny bit off. Of course that's so hard to tell now on a 15 year old car, lol.

Thats really interesting that they chose to use #52... 52 is the color number for the Jamaca Yellow cars in 1992... Its consistant with other information that they used 52 for both colors, but I never thought anything about it until now.

as a note: 51 was the number for the 86-88 Yellow used like that on my Formula.

I think your right, if I remember corretly, one of them was more pale gold and the other more gold.

Well, after I conferred with my paint guy, here's the correct color for 1990+:

GM Aztec Gold - Effect color
Code: 9218 (may be O'reilly's code)
Code2: C9047K M

Verified match to the ones that came off my 92. Of course you could have just done a search..

The only wheel color variance I have ever seen personally is on some 1987 GTAs.

There is a fellow who comes to Dayton every year with a 1987 FRM GTA that has wheels on it that are a lighter champagne color and not the usual gold we have come to know and love. I also saw the same color wheels on an '87 Russet Brown GTA at the Tipp City cruise-in at the 2000 event.

Here is a photo of the car on the far left in the lineup at Dayton in 2002... alas it is not too close a view.... but there is a slight difference obvious to my eyes....in color. I'll see if I can find a better shot of the car in my files.

I do not know the how and/or why the difference exists, but I hope to find out. I'm going to try and do some more research this coming week on this.

As for the 1988-92 GTAs, I've never noticed a color variance among pristine condition wheels....

there are all kinds of free programs on the internet that can make a barcode of any number. so if you know what the barcodes translated out too (what they entered when scanned) then it would be easy to make one.

making look EXACTLY like the formating of the stock barcode would be difficult. but it would scan in the same.

I have a NOS 1991 GTA/Trans Am wheel still in the box, and the gold does not match my 1989 20th TTA wheel.
Also, I have 2 sets of 1987 GTA/Trans Am wheels, and the gold is even different than my '89 and '91 wheel.
Not sure if this helps or not, but just letting you know.

The obvious thing to think would be that the sun could fade the wheels over time... Its funny that way.

With some NOS wheels still in boxes, could you take some pix of them side by side identifying them so we can see the difference?

Great info, I know the colors also vary on the HiTec Turbos.

I would have to say there is a fine line between actual color differences and UV damage.

Does any of this apply to the 86 version?

Dont forget this rim was a Trans Am rim before it was a GTA one!

I only have the '91 GTA wheel NOS in a box.
The two sets of '87 GTA wheels are used sets.
As for a pic of them together, all I have to do is dig them out, and set them alongside my 20th TTA wheel.

Gold was the GTA wheel, charcoal and black were the Trans Am wheels.
But yes, the wheel was first used on the Trans Am. And it was copied off the older style BBS racing wheel style of a few years eariler.
As for the '86 being different, I have never seen a set from the factory on a '86 Trans Am to compare them to the '87s.
Guess I'll look it up in the parts book.
I do know that the '91 GTA wheel is a different part number, maybe because of the gold color difference. I could not see any difference of the wheels themselves, except for the gold color difference. Not sure on the '92s, as my parts books only go up to '91! I thought I had up to '92, so I never bought any that includes the '92 year! Time to spend more money!
I do know that the wheels were made in Japan (as were all the thirdgen Firebird wheels.). I know Classic Ind. dealt direct with the Japanese Company, and had them painted in the gloss black. When talking with the owner at a SEMA show a few years ago, he wanted me to purchase 1,000 wheels to get a discount! That's 250 sets! I passed, as I didn't have quite that many cars!
