4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
Hey guys,
Sorry I haven’t been on the last few days, had a full plate of stuff going on... Anyway, I am currently working with someone who has a Camaro car collection who is interested in the car. He was the one who bid on the car the most on eBay. He is considering the offer we gave him. He has agreed to purchase the car from his highest bid, but I told him that we just couldn’t do that. We would shed way too much red ink, and the owner is just not in the position to lose several thousands of dollars on this car. It’s very sad to say, but we offered him the car for a break even dollar amount of $30,000. I told him that it is just a shame the economy is the way it is, that such a rare and unique car has to be sold at a break even dollar amount. But hey, gotta do what the boss says... I have to admit, I was very shocked to see the bidding just sit there the last hour. I would have thought it would have jumped a few grand at least.
I really don’t think it had anything to do with Easter either. Think about it, I know many of us have forgotten about an auction because we got busy, but how many of us are going to forget we were bidding on a car, let alone an 85 Iroc that is still new!! I think that people just wouldn’t pay anymore…I have told the owner several times that he should just hold on to this car for 10-15 years and then see what it goes for, but he really doesn’t want to do that.
I really wish I had the money to buy this car!! It’s going to kill me to see it go one day!!
I will let everyone know when he gets back with me, and what the current status of the car is.
Thank you everyone for your support!!!
Keith

after having just seen a "driven hard" 86 IROC go for $15,500 on mecum last night, I would love to see your car go on one of the televised auctions...

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
Hello to all thirdgen members
Technically, I'm not new to thirdgen.org- just havn't been around here in a few years, so I started a new username, as I've forgotten my old one.
I just want to say, that I've followed this thread, and I am completely in awe about the history of this car, the story behind it's resurrection, and the effort, and member support it has received, along with Keith it's caretaker. A true testament to GM automotive history. As some have said, this car truly deserves to be a centerpiece in a museum. Or to be in the hands of a capable owner with intimate knowlege, respect, and love for the car.
It would be extremly difficult for me to have a car like this and NOT be tempted to drive it, and live with that dillema. It would kind of be like a curse, and blessing at the same time LOL. However it has been an inspiration to me, and I have decided to begin the restoration of my own 86 IROC Z TPI, that has been sitting in my garage for the last ten years. I pulled the engine & Transmission hoping to rebuild it. I dismantled the 305 back in 2001, and never went any further, as other events in my life took precedence. The car is all original and I have retained every item that has come out of the car. 250.000 KM's roughly on the clock. My daily driver today is a 07 300C SRT 8. I'll always love my IROC though. Anyway I'll leave the details for another thread, once I get started again (if I do- here's to hoping)
Keith I don't know if you are still active here, and God I wish that I had stumbled across this amazing story sooner. I am surprised that your boss, after seeing you put forth such dedication, and time into this beauty, didn't offer you first dibs, since he had no interest in keeping it. I know it is a lot of money, especially in today's bruised ecomomy, but I'm sure there would've been a way to finance this one-of-a kind historical machine. I can't fathom sitting in a 24 year old car, that still has the factory new smell, along with protective plastic on the seats-carpets that has never been removed. A steering wheel that has leather- never been touched by a human hand.
Since this thread is now four months old, I can only speculate where this car is, but if it's still in your hands, I say do what you have to do, to acquire it. IMO your boss owes you a shot at owning it after all the dedication and time that you've put into it.
Not even three weeks ago, I bought out my lease on my SRT 8. Had it been four months sooner, and I knew about this car- The SRT would be sitting on the dealers lot, and I'd be handing 30 grand to your boss no problem. That's five extra G's more than what I bought my SRT 8 out for!
If the car is gone, I hope it wasn't too hard for you to see it go. If not, then by all means brother buy it! Think of it as a long term investment. Either way you have my best wishes, and congrats on a once in a lifetime experience to travel back in time.

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
I can't decide if it's cool or tragic... It's not really all that exciting just because it's such a vanilla Camaro. Yeah it's an Iroc with no miles, but it's not like anyone out there is really enjoying the car. Why the obsession?

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
Yeah I'm with you there all it is is a museum piece and to me a car is meant to be driven but on the other hand there is never gonna be anything like it ever again and a car is only new once so I don't know I guess I see both sides of the argument.

The car is listed on Autotrader, at a run of the mill Ford dealer of all places:

Nobody seems to want this car...how many times has it changed hands?

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
I guess I figured that after all the work and time to get it back to "factory" since its only got 5 miles - The owner would have wanted to keep it. I mean hell, until these cars are like 30-40 years old ppl won't have the respect (money) for a super low mile one.
Although I will say if I had the $$$$ for it, I'd totally buy it.

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
The car is at a Ford dealership because the owner owns the Ford dealership. This car has changed hands really only once. The original owner sold it to guy on the youtube video. Without touching the car or anything, he sold it to the current owner. It's for sale for the right price. Isn't everything? It looks like they've lowered the price to sell it. Maybe they realize that being a Ford dealer doesn't do the car any service and needs to go to a chevy dealer or a museum someone.

If that's the case, damn, it's been sitting for quite a while unsold.

Yes, Keith is still in charge of the day to day with the car. His boss is the guy that won the ebay auction when it was dirty and Keith cleaned it up. Keith is also hoping that it doesn't sell anytime soon since he gets to take it to car shows and meet the wonderful 3rd gen crowd!

Have to say this is one of the more interesting threads on the forum, or any forum. Pretty unusual story. I'd think at some point this car would be worth serious money, maybe not today though.

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
The last I saw, the owner wants $27k for the car. He's actually taking a loss when you think he paid $26000 for the car, and Keith found original rims for $900. Then he had to do some mechanical work before they started the car and then all the hours Keith put into detailing the paint, etc. He bought hundreds of $$ of supplies (buffer, polishes and waxes) also.

I can't believe this car is still for sale...it should be in someone's climate controlled collection by now...steadily increasing in value.

Re: 4.3 mile IROC-Z on eBay - UPDATE
Yup. I think its ingrained into society's collective mind that an IROC has TPI. Not that its really any better, but its probably what more people think of when they think IROC-Z, as far as engines go.

It's been there for awhile. The owner has been trying to sell it for awhile. It has never been on or at Barrett-Jackson. BJ is a no reserve auction so it would have sold there.

I think if that was a TPI car, it would've already sold for that. I realize that a car like that will not be driven anyway, but if I'm going to spend over $20,000 on a third gen, it better make more than 155hp

Yeah, its funny how much misinformation there can be- even here!
I'd seen that LG4 marking on the window sticker during the video on youtube, plus the VIN kinda gives it away. PLUS - You can clearly see the B4Z option code on the sticker, too.
PLUS PLUS PLUS - If it was an L69, wouldn't it have a dual snorkel?

Cool storie but the car's not worth there asking price. Would never get that price at auction see one with 15 miles on it and still owned by dealer son he got 18k for it. That would've been a cool fined

Honestly, if I had $30,000, I would pick this thing up in a flash, then maintain it as is, trailer it to all the car shows, then donate it to a museum or something where it would kept in perfect condition forever.
