Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
Nice thread.... I'm hoping people post current pics of their car that were painted at Maaco years ago... they all look good right away, but what about 5 years from now?
and emokid, your car looks great.. I hope it stays that way
(I miss the black stripe, but you can always add that later)

I did all teh bodywork myself, they just gave it a overall sanding and Painted it. Last time I saw the Car (Last fall when I stored it at my uncles), it still looked great.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
Maaco can do a quality job no question, you just have to pay for it. 1000 bucks will get you a good looking paint job. That is still TONS less than a typical body shop. I worked at a Maaco as a sander and people wanted to pay 300 bucks for a factory looking paint job, which is just insane.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
I had a 1980 Trans Am that I did all the prep work, dents, dings then 2k primer, block sanded for ever and had Maaco paint it black and it came out great. He only charged me $400 jams and all. Also had them do a 1967 Firebird. This time I had them do the body work, prep and paint. It came out even better, Le Mans blue. My Maaco does real good work plus he knows I am pretty picky. I figure a great paint job will cost, what $4-5000. That will last say ten years and your affraid to drive it anywhere. Maaco cost $700-1000. Last low side 3 years and not be affraid to drive it.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
I can't say for sure mine was painted at Maaco, but being an experienced bodyman, I can say for sure it was done at a chain-type paint shop. Actually, it was done 3 times. The car was originally dark red met, then it was sprayed purple met, then charcoal met, then finally black. I got the car in '02, at that time, the black paint looked to be 2 or 3 years old. It looks OK from the grandstands, but up close it looks like poo. It wasn't much better back in '02.
Oh, I have changed the front bumper (that's why it doesn't match), and I have done some touch-ups on the paint here and there.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
Maaco North Hills, Ca. $1000 car needed alot of body work. bad cell pics, but really stunning in person. Super glossy, no orange peel. Is about 2 1/2 year old paint, no chips, scratches, or anything. Really impressed, holding up well.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
When I first got my car it had on a thick layer of primer just sprayed on crappy to protect it from rust I guess.... So I did all the prep work and got it painted at Maaco for $800, 2nd pic is before I lowered it, 3rd is when it is lowerd =D
Quick question- How do I get it to where my pictures show like everyone elses? Where its already big and you dont have to click on it.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
So, question for those who've done all the prep work themselves and just let Maaco lay the paint--
If all you had to have a body shop do was lay the paint, why have Maaco do it instead of an independent shop who would use PPG materials, etc.? What I mean is, is if all that needs to be done is laying the paint, it should be relatively cheap either way, so why not just spend a little more (which is still cheap) to get nice PPG 2-stage paint instead of the questionable Maaco job?
Just curious.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
I would bet the labor and materials for a non maaco paint job would be at least double, maybe triple of maaco.
I'm tempted to find out though... I'm thinking of going to some local auto paint shops and ask them that exact question

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
I'm going to try to post some of mine, but I got the $400 job in 2004 and I'm just now seeing spidering in the paint. I got an estimate at a local shop for $2800 (including some body work from a hit in run on my passenger door).

Maaco
Dupont colors: B9808 Navy Blue / B9149 Bright Silver
10/2007
01/2011 (granted it's garage kept, let out only on a dozen or so weekends a year)
There's some rock chips on the hood and nose, but that's kinda to be expected. Other than that I'm still happy with it for the price I paid (~$1200).

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
The reason why I did all the prep work is because I let Macco paint my first car and they did... bleh, but it was the $200 for my first car... On this Camaro I made sure I did everything for them so it would look awesome and it was also the $800 one on my 88. They reason why I chose Maaco over an Independant shop is because I couldnt really find a nice Independant shop. Also my granpa knew every1 at maaco since he got like 6 cars painted there lol

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
huh...perhaps its not out of the question for me to do mine that route. I'd have to find a good one naturally. Some of those cars really do look pretty good. My problem is, I want to have the metal work done right. Not just bondoed in and sprayed. Seems like the higher up you go with your choice of paint job, the better off the car and the job is. Most are saying why would I want to put a Maaco job on the car after having the work done. Well, my argument is, why leave it in primer when you can have it done color and all. I can always strip it further down the road and have someone paint it with good paint.
Besides, I've been quoted 8500+ for an independent shop to do it. Kind of pointless when all you want is a car that is one color and decent looking. I'm figuring on doing most of the body work too. Maybe even have the car sent in pieces. I'll talk to one more independent shop or two before I just have the metal repaired and I get to work on the body in preparation for the Maaco job. Even the high price guys say if you do the prep work, a Maaco job if done by a good one is not a bad move.

Re: lets see those maaco paint jobs
Mine was painted by the PO and it was a Maco job. It's a 20 footer. The paint itself looks pretty good, but they painted over every ripple and door ding in the car. Since then, I changed to the cowl hood and the Iroc nose. So, I'm torn on wether I should get the new pcs painted to match (which I could prob afford) or wait who knows how long to get the whole thing redone...
