Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Thanks for the reference picture Kwik. I think I am going to go with black roll bar and gray floorpan and trunk. I think this will look great and compliment the engine bay which was painted gray a few months ago.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

I saw a picture on Hot Rod's website a while ago of a car with the interior painted white, it looked pretty clean. Just might be too much work to keep it nice looking inside though.

Picked the car up today. Below are pictures of some of the upgrades. I am extremely happy with the work by Goldman Autorace Specialties.

This past weekend I painted the cage and will begin painting the floors next weekend. I went with a black hammer tone for the cage, gray for the trunk and rear floors. I decided to go with a bed liner spray for the front floors. I will also be painting the dash black.

I'm going to guess the cage builder is 59+ years old.

Should be a fun bracket car.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

The chassis builder is a good friend so he gave us a great deal but it was when he had the capacity in between builds. Originally I only needed a few things done such as fabrication of an aluminum dash, go over welds on roll cage, weld tabs on the roll cage for the switch panel, realign seat, fab manual throttle linkage. As he went over the car, multiple welds were weak and needed to be rewelded and strengthened. We replaced the plastic racing seat with a Kirkey aluminum seat. Since I am a bigger guy, the new seat did not fit perfectly in the car so it needed to be cut and modified to fit.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Beginning of May update - Plan is to fire the car in the next 2 weeks. I am planning to finish the wiring this weekend, install a new flywheel and mount the starter. I should be receiving the trans next week after taking a few weeks for a buddy to go over and make any upgrades for the new setup.

There is light at the end of the tunnel but not after a lot of help and a large time dedication the past few months. My phone took a crap so I lost all of the pictures from the build.

My goal going into the winter was to have the car ready for Super Chevy at Maple Grove July 17th and I anticipate being able to meet that goal. I plan to test at Island Dragway sometime the end of May or June.

Once I get the car out I will work on posting some videos.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Thanks for the support guys. My pop and I made some good progress this weekend. We finished all of the wiring and hooked up the battery terminals. We turned the motor over which was a quite the teaser. We also fabbed and mounted the radiator overflow catch can as well as fabbing and mounting a bracket for the alternator. We also installed the flywheel and bolted a spare trans on to determine fitment of the long tube headers and starter. Found out the stock GM starter won't fit with the long tubes. I will be placing an order this week for a new starter from East Coast Auto Electric.

Small odds and ends left to do which include installing finished trans, weld collectors on headers and paint, fit fiberglass hood, scale the car, order and install new springs, and tighten up the front suspension.

Overall some great progress this weekend and will try to fire the car up on the 23rd if all goes as planned. I will be sure to get a video and a bunch of pictures to make a before and after comparison.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Unfortunately due to a small set back, we will have to postpone firing the car for another couple weeks. I found out that we needed to buy a new reverse valve body for the TH350 which just got delivered yesterday. Our trans builder is racing a divisional this weekend so we should get the trans back Tues or Wed of next week.

This weekend I plan to get a bunch of odds and ends finished up which include:

1) installing oil coolant lines
2) fit and install fiberglass hood
3) Put in tire screws on the rear slicks
4) Install roll cage padding
5) Paint Headers

I will upload some pictures this weekend of the progress we have made over the past month or two.

This weekend was a very productive weekend. Saturday I spent the day completing the small odds and ends. I got the following accomplished:

1) painted headers
2) fit new east coast starter
3) install tire screws
4) install oil coolant lines
5) install and sand fiberglass hood
6) install flywheel

Today I took my reverse manual valve body up to our transbuilder. He immediately installed and we brought the trans home. At this point in time the new to do list focuses on installing the trans, driveshaft, and converter. Then prime the motor to be fired up.

I snapped a few pictures this weekend while in the garage. Let me know what you guys think of the progress.

Subscribed. Good progress! The dash looks much better black. What do you figure the car will weigh when complete? Maybe I missed it, but what convertor are you running? Is it a trans brake VB?

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

The dash came out great. I am very pleased with it. I have no idea what the car will weigh. Once we install the trans, we will scale the car which will give us the weight on each tire. I couldnt even begin to guess since almost the entire car was redone. Right now i have a 10 inch street/strip TCI converter. If I remember correctly it is a 3000 stall. I am in talks with a Stock racer we know who has a couple 8 inch converters laying around for a 305.

Yes it is an old torker intake. I picked that up about 5 years ago from the flea market at maple grove. Think I paid 50 bucks for that and a set of valve covers.

lots better intakes on the market these days. i like low buck builds and am interested in results, but depending on your combo, a performer rpm air gap or a vic jr may work better.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Yesterday was a big day. We got the trans, converter, starter, and headers installed and fired up the motor for the first time. The 305 fired right up and idled nicely. We got the motor warmed up and tested the water pump and electric fan. We got the motor up to about 170 degrees and then turned on the water pump and fan and within 2-3 minutes the motor cooled to 145 degrees.

Only issue encountered was the fuel pump has a hairline crack and is leaking. Easy fix though.

Once we install the new fuel pump, we will set the timing which is going to be around 40. Estimating the compression of the motor to be 9:1.

This week I will purchase the final parts we need (Helmet, jacket, springs, fuel pump, and seat belts). Planning to test at Island Dragway Either Friday July 3rd or the weekend of July 10th then its on to Super Chevy at Maple Grove July 17-19.

Below is the link to a video of when we fired the car up yesterday.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

I was planning on building the 350 for this year but just did not have the funds available to get it done. I had the 305 short block together so I figured why not throw that in this year and work on getting the 383 stroker together for next year.

The heads are stock OE and the cam is an Elgin flat tappet. I don't remember the specs on the cam off hand but it is a very mild cam that came with the motor.

Z28- I went the route with the 305 since I had all the parts sitting around and just needed to get new gaskets for it. Once I build my 383 (might be a year or so) I will use my 305 as a spare. Never know when you might need the spare. I am slowly building my list of spares.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

The topic you are replying to is called a "thread". You can post your own by backing out to the main section of the drag race board and there is a button you can click on to start your own discussion, this way you don't derail the conversation. i'm guessing you're new to the internet. posting your phone number in a public thread is not really kosher. However, if you click on the name of the guy you're trying to talk with, there is a "private message" function, which is like an internal email. i guess being 2015, the concept of someone being new to the internet is a little foreign to me.

we are aiming to take the car to island to test July 3rd, July 11th or July 12th. All depends on the how much we get done this weekend.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

i missed this thread originally. nice work with what you have. should be fun regardless of what it runs. if you are bracket racing, its fun to be the slower car sometimes.

the mention of building a 350... i would pass on using aluminum rods. for your goals, or even going single digits, steel rods are the way i would go.

Thanks for the advice. I am not sure what we will end up buying as far as rods. I have a set of Probe aluminum pistons and a set of AFR aluminum heads. I am focused on getting the car out with the 305 right now and working on the 350 over the winter if the funds are available.

Re: Camaro Drag Car Project

Today we installed the new fuel pump and set the timing on the motor to 42 degrees.

Should be receiving the final parts tomorrow in anticipation of finishing the car Saturday. Springs, harness, helmet, and jacket are the final 4 items we are waiting on. Hopefully the final large order to summit has been placed....at least until the winter. Fingers are crossed.

Dude you asked me for pictures 4 days ago and I said I would get you some pictures this weekend meaning tomorrow. To reiterate I do not have anything in the trunk area meaning fuel cell or batteries. Patience is a virtue. I will get you some pictures tomorrow.
