Anyone using stock ECU with forced induction?

i have been gaming out the idea of adding a Procharger surpentine driven SC to my TPI car. it is an '89 Formula 350 w/ L98 & Mass Airflow metering. the current mods are as follows:

SLP CAI, Stock 48mm TB w/ air foil, Port matched plenum, AS&M runners, Edelbrock Vortec Manifold, Aluminum Vortec "Fast Burn" heads, Dyno Don Headers, cat-delete, Hooker cat-back. Holley AFPR, 24 lb Injectors, Walbro 255, Fluidampr, hypereutectic pistons (9.3:1)-ish, forged connecting rods, 1.5 roller rockers, ZZ4 (474/510 - 208/221) cam. Trans Go shift kit, 9.5" Vigilante 2500-2800 stall converter. SFCs, Hotchkis LCAs/panhard rod/springs, torque arm, wonderbar,
custom chip...
and probably some other stuff.

the $5000 or so cost of the Supercharger kit is not necessarily prohibitive. nor is the potential $1500-$2000 installation and tuning cost. what i do find to be prohibitive is the potentially additional 5 to 7K on a new ECU that has parameters better able to handle this type of modification. that's $1500-$2000 on a new ECU plus up to another 5K to have it wired in.

has anyone had good results with a set up such as this using a custom chip for the stock ECU? are good results (driveability) unlikely?

and is there anything new on the market that is more is close to a "plug and play" situation for our cars, which doesn't require as many man hours of splicing and testing?

Thanks.

Re: Anyone using stock ECU with forced induction?

You can tune for boost controlling the LV8 with your MAF setup while fudging some of the numbers, or you can convert to Speed Density and drop in the $59 code, plenty of members have gone that route. You can even go Megasquirt. However, I would consider running the EBL Flash, being that your harness is already setup for it, and it is just a matter of swapping a few pins. System comes with boost control, and self tunes with any wideband you choose. Dropping that much money on a supercharger deserves the right tuning ability for it, and I wouldn't bother trying to tune the stock MAF system and stock ECM, it's not worth the effort...

Re: Anyone using stock ECU with forced induction?

I am using a 7730 ecm. Running a
$59 mask. I like the set up. I have been running it for about 3 years now on a turbocharged v6 thirdgen.

Easy to tune. A afr guage and boost controler are also pinned into the ecm For data logging and control. Also a 3 step ignition. I am also running dis ignition.

Drivability is good and smooth. I mainly bracket race the car but overall the 7730 set up is a good one and many people on here run the $59 mask with great sucess.

Re: Anyone using stock ECU with forced induction?

Ran $59 as well. Was good system, took alot of time getting my motor to run decent tho. Lot of fine tuning trying to get it perfect. Mainly had issues getting it to cold start well but it was manageable

As Street says, the ebl system is pretty good. I havent seen it but everyone seems to like it. I want to try it for my 305 turbo car but may run code 59$ again since funds are low for that car

Since it already has the 165 ECM then going with a simple code change to the Aussie boost code at pcmhacking.net would be the most simple was to go. Just wire a MAP in place of the MAF. It would be worth it to add the NVRAM module sold there and do on the fly tuning if you are new to tuning.

Re: Anyone using stock ECU with forced induction?

thanks for the info, guys. the EBL Flash seems promising. forced induction is probably about the fourth or fifth thing down on the list and by far the most major undertaking - not 100% decided if i will even go that route, but once you reach all your other goals, you do tend to get the itch. near to mid-term future goals are:
17" wheels/tires (Ronal R15 Firehawk)
port work for the Edelbrock Vortec lower intake
paint work
then maybe forced induction - the less hassle it appears to be the more likely i will pull the trigger.
