So I have a 1987 Camaro with the 305. I bought it off of one mechanic who seems to have taken a lot of stuff out. So I got it down only spitting out one check engine light code (23). In an earlier thread I posted I was told that a code 23 would be for a mixture control solenoid. There's a couple problems:

1) Quite a few wires have been cut from the wiring harness and I believe that includes the plug for a mixture control solenoid (which doesn't exist in this case)

2) I believe the carburetor is aftermarket. (carter 9637sa) There is physically no place for anything missing as far as I can see.

So... Would it be possible to take the right wires and maybe ground them or do something to make the computer think that the solenoid is there? This is the last code I need to clear before I can take it in for deq.

Why keep the ECM?

without the original computer controlled carburetor there is nothing left for the computer to control UNLESS you've installed an alternate Throttle Position Sensor to your Carter carb or linkage. In that case the computer could still control the timing and converter lock-up IF the computer controlled distributor is still there.

could help more if we knew exactly what you have now, where you want to go with it and how much effort you're willing to expend.

no. the emissions check is going to look for all of the original equipment, installed and functioning.

The mixture control solenoid will be found in the original carb (or other very similar original ones); not ANY aftermarket one.

If you're in California, you're going to have to find an original carb, or you will NEVER get it through the **** probe and cavity search.

I'm not in California, could I just hook a mixture control solenoid up and just have it hanging out?

Probably not...

If they actually LOOK AT the motor, that won't exactly pass muster.

Similarly, if they use the sniffer on the exhaust, it probably won't pass that way either; SES light or not.

Where are you? What are the rules in that locale?

you either need to find a cc carb with the mcs or you need to pull the carb, pull the dist and replace them with manual equivalents. you can only do one or the other.

If you need to pass emissions or original eqiuipment checks then youll have to find a cc carb somewhere. if not, your options are plenty if your wallet is willing.

I'm in Oregon but I'm not sure if I need original parts. How easy is it to find the original carburetors?

Well find that out before wasting time effort and money on stuff that has no chance of passing...

Not too hard to find OE carbs. Unfortunately most of them are going to be in pretty sad shape by now. But you can come up with rebuilt ones easy enough; just, kinda $$$$.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is the kind of thing that should be researched BEFORE buying a car, not AFTER.

Not Medford and Eugene is exempt but pretty much everywhere else yes

I'm not in the USA but our Holden's (Australian division of GM) used these in various forms for about 30 odd years. Im sure if you went through a junkyard youd find one pretty quick. Soak it in some metal rescue (awesome product) put a $40 rebuild through it and you should be fine.

if you're serious in making the effort, a few pictures of your engine area may help us provide additional advice and/or assistance. chances are that more than just the carburetor was removed or hacked.
