lb9 factory heads reworked, and top end help?
whats up fellas(and girls maybe!!)..ok so im finally starting to tear into my 87 roc lb9 t5,she runs great just needs alittle freshing up and the valve seals are toast.so i have couple question regarding few things and i know this has probably been talked about on this site a million times but all the threads i have read are couple years old so maybe new prespective wont hurt.
im pulling the heads and im gonna get the reworked and also installing a crane cam 2023 while i have top end torn down.....(1)when i get the heads reworked do i need to put bigger valves?i know i need new vlve springs but is there anything else im missing??....(2)when i install the new cam do i need a fuel pressure regulator and if so what pressure should i run?....(3)also with the cam install do i need a new tune?install a chip??can i run it on factory prom,100% stock motor minus cam??any suggestions on what i need if so....(4)when i do get the motor back together and running what should i set my timeing at?advance couple degree?with the ecm wire unplugged correct?.......any help on this would be great.thanks matt

I don't know what exactly a Crane "2023" cam is. but probably you will need a tune with the new cam. Ed Wright at Fastchip can handle your needs for about $300. there may be some places to get it done cheaper, but Ed is very good as far as mail order chips go.
you say that you're going to "get your heads reworked." 1) assuming that whomever is reworking your heads specializes in that sort of thing, they will make a determination on what is to be done with the valves, and it will be part of the service that you pay for. 2) I think a lot of people might consider it more cost effective to buy a set of GM iron Vortec heads (which can be had for fairly cheap). I am not sure if those require D-Port compatible headers. I have the more expensive aluminum Vortec (Fast Burn) heads on my car and had to buy D-Port compatible headers.
you should not "need" a new fuel pressure regulator with or without a new cam, unless the stock one is failing - or you just want an adjustable one.
since the new configuration of the engine will not be the stock configuration, the timing (as far as I know) will depend on the new configuration. so that might fall under "mechanical tuning" once the engine is back together. someone else might have a more definitive answer for you on that.

If you're talking about the Crane 2032 cam, then you can get away with no computer tuning. You will need an adjustable regulator, and the better springs. You certainly don't need bigger valves.
