Dark oil out of 700r4??
Hello Gents,
I had to lift my engine (350 cu in) to get the oil pan out (had to put the oil pickup tube back with a bracket) and while lifting the engine it, and the transmission, moved forward.
My driveshaft popped out and dark oil (and lots of it) came spewing out of the back of the transmission. It sure as heck doesn't look like ATF, its a pretty dark color, almost like old engine oil, and it stinks.
Is this gear oil coming out of the back? I'm pretty confused, any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm worried that it is in fact ATF, which may mean something is very wrong with my tranny.
Thanks

sounds like just old, used ATF that needs replaced-just replace with new ATF nothing wrong with ATF spilling when driveshaft pulled out-they all will do that.

Thank you for the reply! I replaced fluid/filter only 10,000 miles ago... so it is the ATF for certain. Hmmm I wonder what could have caused it to look so bad after such a short time?

Dark and smells bad sounds like burnt frictions in your trans. Be on the lookout for a v8 transmission, sounds like you will need one soon

Yup, a sign of MUCH worse things to come; and sooner rather than later.
