Where to find input shaft checkball capsule.
The other day I found a torlon checkball in my pan, and I've determined that it must have escaped from the input shaft checkball capsule. I had the transmission out and used my cheapy oil pump puller to pull the pump. It appears to have spread the tangs on the capsule out enough for my checkball to go on a magical journey through the torque convert and into the pan. Anyone know where I can find this capsule? I had the quicker lockup version included in the Pro-Built kit with the torlon checkball and the extra flow. Not having a checkball my lockups are pretty harsh sometimes, so I'd like to get it fixed when I get my new converter on.

This "dual feed" PN 8685839 capsule should have been in the rebuild kit. I do not recommend taking out the capsule, as it makes lockup too firm and is hard on the damper springs in the torque converter. The capsule has a steel non-removable checkball in it. Torlon checkballs are for the separator plate only.

Hmm, well that's a bit concerning then, seeing as it certainly felt like it wasn't a steel checkball. I'll have to double check. If I do find that the checkball is still present in the input shaft I'll have to check the valvebody. I would think I would notice if one of those was missing, but perhaps not. The only strange thing I can think of is a slight shudder before going into gears, but that could be attributed to some burned spark plug wires I need to replace.

Ya, I'm aware of that. But last time I had the trans out and used the pump puller it bit into the folded over part of the capsule and spread it out a bit, potentially enough to release the checkball from the capsule. I've ordered a new capsule and also some new torlon checkballs just in case. I'll just have to wait and see if the checkball is still in the capsule when I have it out. Thanks for the part number, I'm hoping it's the input shaft capsule and not one of the valve body checkballs I found.

Turns out it was a torlon checkball, belonging to the valve-body side. I missed it last time I had the valvebody off apparently. Belongs to passage 17, which is overrun clutch feed it looks like. By the look of the separator plate it's just a slow-apply checkball, and since I didn't use 3rd much since the last time I had it apart I don't think I noticed any difference.
