One of the lowest mileage Z28 IROC-Z
Just found this board today. Not sure if this is the best place to post this.
I purchased the car on 5/01/1986. The color is red, It had the correct options that I thought at the time were needed. Purchased car with all the items attached to the seats, steering wheel and carpet. Took car home dirty from dealer.
It has other options but heres the ones that I thought counted.
G80, J65, LB9 and of course B4Z
The car has been stored most of its life in heated garage.
I get it out every once in a while. Right now it has 2719 miles.
Is there any other low mileage 1986 Z28's out there or do I have the lowest or where am I in the pecking order.
Thanks, Included rear axle pic

I put the first thousand miles on it in 3 months. It just never got rained on and we were careful. Things happened with the job at that time peroid and couldn't enjoy the vehicle. So it was stored. Its only been washed 2 times since its inside most of the time.

wow, that is some real low miles. very impressive. could you please post some more pics of the car, the engine and the interior thanks.
I don't have that many good pictures of it out. When it was out I was driving the car and not worring about taking a picture and didn't have digital camera back then.
I took this picture last winter to show someone the motor on the internet. You can see the white oxidation on the rubber that connects up to the tuned port plate injection plate.
I will get some better pictures in the future.

That's really sick and twisted. I came inches away from buying an IROC with 6000 miles, but I'm kind of glad I didn't for two reasons.
1) It sure cost a lot more than the one I currently have.
2) I'd feel guilty every time I took it for a drive; knowing I was jumping on a pristine vehicle.

That's damned impressive. I wish I had the money to buy Matt Whatshisname's 2,200 mile 85 when he sold it a few months ago. That car was as amazing as yours.
Would you mind emailing me a pile of pictures along with a description of the car? I'd love to add it to the IROC Homepage.
BTW, the 140 speedo showed up real late in the production run in 86. I'm surprised that an april build has it. I didn't think they showed up until right near the end of the run. I guess you learn something new all the time

All pre-'90 TPI cars are MAF equipped...no exceptions. This car has a MAF...
The car is stored with other items in the building so its hard to get good pictures. The struts that hold up the hood would have to be replaced because I guess they have lost there charge from very little use. I noticed to that on the bottom skirts there is white oxidation thats has leached through. It just wipes off but the car needs a good washing. I am adding a pic here of the front end area. Looks like some spiders in the past have been taking a ride in the Z28.

definately not any where near the lowest.....but nice all the same.
can i ask why you would want to do something like that?
personally, i can't stand not being able to drive mine; i bought mine to drive it....... a car like yours is nothing more than a picture. sure it's nice, but after you've seen it you move on.
again though, i give you credit for not driving it; i wouldn't be able to do it. i'll be sure to think about it during one of my many cruises with my baby....

I can see I know very little about this car compared to almost everyone else. Didn't know those green marks were for inspection. Maybe someone can help me on this. I have included a picture of the exhaust coming off the engine. The exhaust on this car has one huge pipe collecting the exhaust from the engine that goes into the catalytic converter and then exits into another big pipe and that goes into the muffler out the back. When I looked back in the 80's for the car I was buying some Z 28's had much smaller exhaust pipes than what I described and the catalytic converter was a different style. How was it decided what system was put on the Z 28's? One person I knew back in the 80's his black and sliver Z 28 had a tuned port with the small pipe set up. I know the one on this car sure sounds good when at speed or leaving the stop light with the t/tops out.

Chet, that exhaust looks like every single-cat 86+ system that I've seen. Well, except for the fact that yours is still brand new.
The 85 TPI cars had a different setup that included a cat with a 4-bolt mounting flange. Maybe that's what you're confusing it with.

I was going through my papers that came with the car and I found a set of extra keys (they don't have the black rubber on them) and these key rings still in the cellophane and I had forgotten that I even had these. I don't think I will open this up now.

Back to the exhaust question. The 5.0 Liter H.O. and TPI cars had a different exhaust systen than the "base" 305 LG4 cars. The converter on the H.O. & TPI cars was a monolith converter that uses screens internally and flows much better which is whats pictured. The base LG4 cars use a pellet type converter which is much flatter and doesn't flow well at all. I'm not sure of the diameters between the two exhaust systems, but the TPI system is the bigger of the two.
Taht remainds me of the guy next to my he owns a 69 nova in perefect conditiong. It sleeps in the garage all of the time. He bought it new. I saw it move once out of the garage when I first got my camaro. If it comes out this spring Mabee I'll see if he will race
I finally made it up off the floor in the garage, but my vision was blurred and it didn't matter because after seeing it I knew why in 1986, I loved the look of this car. Blurry or clear it doesn't matter its still a classic design.

Damn that is beautiful! I've always had a soft spot for the IROCs but for the most part I couldn't shake the love for the Pontiac T/As. I must say that is a keeper and a perfect specimen for a future museum display vehicle. I have a '89 20th Anniversary TTA that I'm cleaning the underbody up right now (it has 5,825 original miles on it)and I thought that was clean; you really bummed me out when I seen those pictures.
Thanks for sharing 'em and keep the miles low on that beauty.

I didn't have a whole lot of time for the Z28 today. So I will wheel it on out of here.
'84 15th Anniversary T/A,
I really like those white Trans Ams. I like the blocked front end of that 84 T/A. I had forgot about those.

We should thank Raptory for the pics
of his near perfect car. I posted a request about 1 month ago asking for pics of 80s of IROCs when they were new at a dealer or some that owners might have taken when their cars were new . These pics are the 2nd best thing to original pics of a Brand NEW IROC right off the showroom floor. These pictures will help those who are interested in restoring their vehicles to original. Thanks again and keep them coming.
Some where on Comedy Central there is a show called Bil Stein's Money. That guy was in wonder years too as a techie school teacher. Was he smart enough to build this bilstein shock tower? That Bil was good.

Chet, have you had the car appraised? The guy who bought mine
('85 IROC, 2,490 miles when I sold it) had to get it appraised in order to get a loan on it. It appraised for $15,000.

Matt, my IROC has the goo too.
Your car still gave me chills though. I still open up the interior pics once in a while to get that warm fuzzy feeling that I imagine I would have gotten if I bought one of them new.

Mirsiro427,
I have not had the car appraised. I was there in 1986 when the car came in and it was a choice between this one and a black one. I took the red because it did not have 3 miles on it and for some reason the black had over 10 miles. I thought I was going to be driving it and didn't want to take care of the black.
I did get it out one time in late 1995 and was thinking about selling it. I got it out and cleaned it up a little and thought it looked to good to sell when it was sitting on the drive.
I would think one thing you guys are going to kill me on is when I purchased the car I had no idea that it would end up this way and I personally did not like the decals that were on the side of the doors. I don't remember the exact time I took them off but it was within the first three months of having the Z28. I guess if I need them back on I could put them back because you can kinda still see where they should go. A hot hair dryer takes them off real quick.
I will get some more PICS in the next couple of days. Heres one looking up at the front of the axle.

I think it's GREAT!
And insane at the same time. I'd be afraid to drive it anyplace. I noticed that the white powdery stuff is still present on the rubber intake bellows!
My '87 IROC mostly sits around too. IIRC, it has 84k miles.
Of course, people say my Acura Legend is kinda insane....318K miles on the original engine and drive train.

To keep the originality of the car I would get the exact placement (which is known here) and buy the IROC-Z stickers and put them on.
You gotta have the stickers.

Oh man, I need stickers bad.
Where is the best place to purchase them? Is it your local Chevy dealer who only sells trucks now?
When I am sitting in it, I can't see the stickers when I am looking out the roof. But when its dark I will take the handy dandy Camaro flashlight and see if they are still hanging on when there put back in there proper location.

Classic Industries, Next Generation, or Phoenix Graphix, don't know if you can still get them at the dealer.
