Why are BFG drag radials "R" rated?

Why are BFG drag radials "R" rated?
Why are they only rated to 106 mph, Tire Rack has them listed as an "R" rating. Can it go faster than this, but only for "brief" amounts of time? What's up wit' dat'?

That's strange. The only thing that I can think is that if your going to be doing more than 106 mph in the 1/4, the drag radials probably aren't your best choice. You'll probably have hookup issues at that point and should really be running slicks.
This is just a guess of course and tirerack could just be a misprint. That's my $0.02.

Ok, I don't know why they have an R rating but you can go faster than that with them.

The page said some guy did 8.675 seconds at 164.14 mph so that shows you can go faster with them.

The Rated Speed only describes the top speed for which the tire is cerified for. It does not indicate the total performance capabilities of the tires. Tire manufactures do this to cover there *** pretty much cuase if somthing happens above this speed they are not liable. The BFG are definetly capable of speeds well above the R limit.

I would think the "R" rating is correct for those tires, because when they test for speed rating it's sustained speed for 10 minutes under a load and done by third parties. My guess would be the side walls (their strength compared to weight of the tread) are the weak link too high sustained speeds. They are drag radials anyway not for landspeed records.

the 'r' in the tire nomenclature (275/50r15) means they are Radial tires. they have a 'z' speed rating

I concur with Mrr23.
Even though BFG does not state on their site, in any catalog or other media specifically what the speed rating for the Drag Radial is, it has been confirmed by their Technical dept. the tire is 'considered' "Z" rated.

i was a bf goodrich distributor when they 1st came out in 1987. it's on the sidewall just after the nomenclature. there is a 2 digit number with a letter. 89z for instance. that is where you find the speed rating. the number is the load carrying capacity which is on another chart.
