Fiberglass hood?????
Ok, I'm thinking about getting a fiberglass hood. I have a few questions though, hopefully you guys will be able to answer them. First of all does anyone know the difference in weight between the stock hood and say an ASCD hood?? I've heard some people say that the fiberglass hoods aren't really much lighter than the stock steel, and I'm hoping to shave some weight off the front end. Next, how durable are they?? Any info is appreciated, thanks.

I can't see how a fiberglass hood can be the same weight as a steel hood unless the firber hood has mounds and mounds of support bracing.
I know on the rx7 when switching from a steel hood to the stock aluminum hood it goes from around 40lbs down to around 10lbs.
you can easily feel the difference
on a hood as largeer car like the f-body it would be even mroe noticable

Maybe if U shoot an email to some of the different mfg's, they can tell U how much the different hoods weigh, that U are interested in, or maybe the info is on the web site???

I picked mine up from RamAirHoods.com. (about 8 miles away) it fit perfect and is deffinitely lighter than the steel hood. - I agree on the Unlimited a$$ products. Yes, they've been around for ever building glass body parts. Cheap priced and cheaper quality...you get what you pay for...most of the time.

i got a jongbloed 3inch cowl induction hood and its definatly lighter but as far as performance goes i coulnt tell ya , if anything it came from the functional cowl induction all the air getting sucked in under acceleration sounds pretty cool though . definatly worth it if your carb'd or running tbi, as far as fitment i think we had it on in well under an a hour

ok now
well lets just start off saying that i have the SS hood on my 1990 camaro... again, the first one blew off on the freeway. I purchased my hood from Hawks and they claim Ascd makes them. The hood is lighter then stock, but not as much as you think. The SS hood Hawks sells is double ply. One day about a year after I purchased the hood I was driving to work when all of a sudden my hood blew off... well half of it, Anyways I pulled over and got out and looked at the front of the car and what i saw was exposed fiberglass(red) it looked horrific It reminded of the hood I purchased awhile back from UP22.com or as others on this forum call them "Unlimited Products" I fortunately drove up to corona to get it and man was i pissed off. First of all there was only one person working some lady who seemed to know nothing at all, anyways I had to walk into the back where they store the hoods and grab the hood myself off the second shelf then carry it to her small office. Lets just say right off the bat if you havent already noticed they had the light factor going and nothing else. It was a single thin ply of fiberglass and the underside was ugly, you know exposed fiberglass. That's not the worst part, I started looking over the hood when I noticed a large crack between the mounting holes for the rightside hinge and told her about it and she had the nerve to tell me "it's just the gel coating", I almost punched her. I told her right there "I didnt wait almost a month to get a cracked hood"(you know because there's a wait period on there hoods) so I told her I wanted a full refund and she told me theres a 15% restocking fee and they'll put my money back in my account in about a week. Well I got my money back and saved a little more and bought the SS hood I told you about. When I called Hawks and told them what had happened they sent me a brand new one with no extra cost to me. I guess I wasnt the only one who had this happen. Well the hood isnt perfect ,but it will make due for me. The corners stick up like someone said earlier, there is low and high spots, nothing a body shop couldn't fix before you paint it. If you want less of a hassle just get a steel hood from GOODMARK, there hoods are gm certified and I'm sure there worth every penny. To bad they dont have an SS style hood.

My 4" cowl induction hood bolt-on, the bolt holes on the drivers side were not in the correct spot. Off by over an inch, which made the hood sit way crooked in relation the fenders. I had to grind out the holes on the OEM hood hinges a bunch--both at the hood and at the fender-- to move them to get the hood to line up.
Also, the hood had a front lip about 1 1/2'' that hung down that kept it from closing all the way.
The hood latch mounting bracket holes were off and had to relocate that as well.
A BOLT-ON HOOD IS NOT NECESSARILY A BOLT-ON JOB!!!!!!!
It took a friend of mine and myself about 10 to 12 hours work time to make it fit right.
There were no instructions of any type.
By the way, my Oem hood fit perfect--no fitment issues af any type.
When I called to at least find what all needed to be done and to tell them of my expeiances, they just "BLEW ME OFF".
Even though I love the way the hood looks, I was very dissatisfied with Glasstek!!!!!!!

Like i said a few times in this thread, i've had a good experience with the SS hood. Got it from Hawks, took about a day to fit it on, but with a little bit of filing of the corners it looks great. Can't tell its a aftermarket hood (of course if you knew that the SS hood is stock)

My SS hood from Hawks needs at least 6 or 7 hours of work to get it to fit right. The driver side is warped up about a 1/2 inch above the fender for a good foot.
Also the gaps on the left and right side are in excess of 3/8"
The front lip is too short by about 1/2 inch.
I test fit it on 2 camaros to be sure.
Two thumbs down!!

[rant]You users who like to post "search", please don't unless you have something to contribute to the thread in addition. Multiple users posting the search icon is a waste of time and a poor way to increase your post count which is absolutely pathetic.[/rant]
I definitely noticed a weight reduction. I needed all the room I could get, this is a Glasstek 4" cowl. Currently I am about an inch or two from filling it as well.

i got the harwood 3 in cowl for my car. i thought it was considerably lighter, and it gave me enough clearence for the set up i have. the hoods can be alittle work to make them line up nicely but harwood purposely leaves extra fiberglass on some edges so that if it does get damaged its something that would be removed anyway. as for the "is it worth it factor?" id say yes. i know its alot of bills but 1 it gave me the clearence i needed 2 i got some air flow from it and 3 it really finished off the hard i have put so much hard work into. it makes the car look real good, and you dont have to hack up you stock hood to make things fit.

I purchased a jongbloed from G&T fiberglass, I believe it is listed as a 3". in any case it the smaller of the 2 he has. I can't vouch much for weight savings but I can vouch for it being bolt on. It is well made and even at 100+ MPH i do not get any of the typical Fiberglass hood shake. Infact if it was painted you would swear it was steel. I've visited G&T myself and the gentleman who owns it a really good guy. I wouldrecommend him to any one.

I have a lift off 3 inch cowl hood on my car. it was already on there when i bought it, but its very light. i would know, ive had to take that thing off in WAAAY too many parking lots to fix something. but as far as fitting goes, it fits pretty well with the exception of being warped on the passenger side about a half an inch. oh and the hood pins put in dimples.
