Car: 85 Camaro IROC
Engine: 5.7 TPI
Transmission: 700-R4
Axle/Gears: open rear, 3.42 gears
HAWKS HPS BRAKE PADS

ok, so my camaro had never had good brakes, and i attributed it to the fact that it was an old car and blah blah blah.
besides, people are always saying how thirdgens have terrible brakes.
well it was time for new front pads and at the suggestion of everybody on the board, i got the HAWKS HPS PADS for around $50 IIRC.
what it comes down to is that that was the best $50 i have ever spent.
my pedal used to go halfway down before anything started happening.
i could lock the brakes up, but not easily
well that all changed.
i ended up changing my brake fluid after i got the pads in and wow.
the brakes are pretty dang good now.
not like new cars, but not terrible either.
no more of that last minute "can i actually stop in time?" feeling i used to get a lot lol

Contrary to popular belief, the front brakes on a 3rd gen is more than good enough WITH A GOOD PAD for street driving. The only time you need better brakes is if you plan on road coursing/lapping it.
New fluid and a good pad is half the battle.

i have an 84 caprice classic.
the thing weighs close to 4000 lbs and has super soft springs and shocks.
however i feel like if i were to try and stop as fast in the camaro as i can in my caprice, it wouldnt end well.
the caprice has the 12" front brakes that were part of the 1LE package, and i feel like they make a huge difference in stopping confidence.
the camaro isnt far behind, but its still noticably not as good.

I have to agree that the choice of pad makes a HUGE difference in stopping performance. I put factory 1LE brakes on the front of my 89, and with the factory pads, it honestly didn't feel like it stopped any better than the puny original front brakes. I replaced the original pads with a set of Bosch ceramic pads, and it was like night and day! I was thinking I wasted a ton of money upgrading to the 1LE's until I replaced the pads. That being said, I would assume better pads would make a considerable difference with the single piston calipers as well.
