True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

An old buddy of mine told me about this HID Kit he just installed on his truck, so I went to their website and checked it out. I have to admit I'm pretty surprised you can buy this kit with a Lifetime Warranty for less than 30 bucks. Keep in mind that doesn't include a Relay, but if you have a larger alternator (ie. 160 amp) you "might" not need one. The Relay is only like $19 if you do need one.

They also have the "Slim-Ballast" Digital Kit, and it's only $10 more. Can't really go wrong at that price.

Anyway, here's their link: http://www.ddmtuning.com/index.php?p=home

Where are you getting the projector housing from? I have not seen a 4x6 true projector housing.

I'm not sure, I haven't bought 'em yet. Why, would the HIDs melt them if they were plastic? It only talks about having glass lenses.

The body is composite. Most (if not all) have a glass lens.HIDs will not melt them, but they are NOT real projectors.

Yeah no kidding, especially at that price. ($26.00)

I actually bought a set of the 7" round ones for my '72 Z28. (Not with HIDs though) I have the halos hooked up so they'll come on with my parking lights. The only thing I'm really concerned about when using the HID kit with these particular headlights, is the reflective background. It almost seems as if it would cause the light to reflect everywhere and thus be TOO bright.

to get the best out of your HID kit, you need real projectors. theres a thread on here of a guy that put projectors out of a jag into his camaro with very little custome work. i plan on doing the same thing in the near future.

The opposite may be true!

Really? Wow, it just seems like with all that chrome inside the housing, and also with the HID's being brighter than H4 bulbs, that it would be super bright. Huh, ok well I don't think I'll be going that route then.

So what it is that you're running? I searched around a little bit and found that you're running Xenarcs but I couldn't find any pictures of your car with them.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

I put 55 watt 6000k DDM HID kits in the highs and lows on my 95. Everyone says you don't really need them on the high beams and they are right because you will almost never use them but they are there if I ever do need them. Even with my crappy stock light housings they are still extremely bright. I did fab up my own relay harness too. If I was to do it again I would get 5000ks because they are pretty much pure white. Mine have a bluish tint, especially for the first few hours of operation. Road signs appeared blue in the distance and then would turn more of a white. Now that the lights have some hours on them they appear blue when looked at from the side but from the front they are mostly white and the reflection on road signs appears white.

Might be brighter when looking at them, but the lamps dont aim the light where you need it(on the road). That round lense is basically a magnifying glass, not an actual projector lens.

I have the sylvania xenarcs with Valeo projectors mounted in those fake ebay projector lamps. You can kinda see them in the Sig.My thread has plenty of pics.

There a couple threads on this, but everyone else's are those BMW lamps.Which are ellipsiod as opposed to projectors.

If you're referring to this thread there isn't a single picture. It appears you went in and deleted them all.

**EDIT** Nevermind, this is actually something I need to put on the back burner. I have so many other things right now that need more attention than my stupid headlights.

I'm not sure if anyone here has ever used this kit on a 3rd gen or not, but they have used the kit on other cars. My buddy has the Apex kit on his '98 Silverado and they look great.

The thing is, HID's work best with true Projector housings, and as we all know, there really isn't much out there in the way of a TRUE 4x6 Projector housing. There's one or two places that sell 'em, but they're like $400 or more.

Now you COULD actually use 'em in those fake ebay projector housings, they just wouldn't look as good. (They actually sell 'em on ebay with the HID conversion for around $100) And yes, the HID kits are a Plug & Play setup for the most part. There's very little wiring involved.

Does the DDM kit come with the harness/relay?I thought i was sold seperately. They do have a harness for $20, i thought its because the kits dont come with it.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

uhh...**** idk what would u need a harness for??

this is what it says:
Use this relay harness to connect HIDs to cars with very small gauge wiring that cannot supply the initial surge current required to light the bulbs reliably. Symptoms indicating the harness is required would be intermittent starting or lights going out after being turned on for several minutes and requiring you to turn the lights off and back on for them to turn back on again.

Recommended for all 50W HID installations but most American and European cars work at 35W/50W without the harness. The harness is definitely recommended for Quad's and other ATVs or when running multiple HID installations. This harness is a fused relay isolation harness capable of supplying 40A at 12vdc.

so im guessing that we would need this stupid thing??

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

The harness makes it P&P.The wireing in our cars is pretty old too. That is a good reason to use the relay/harness.Im using one in my car & both bikes.Mostly cause of the initial start up voltage required.I know of several people who have had issues with start up & the lamps flickering afterwards.

If you look on there web site they have "how to's" on installation.I thought i saw one for the harness.I was gonna try to make one from the pics, but i have'nt checked it out.$20 aint bad though for a harness.

Harness is 4th from the bottom. Not too difficult to make.Would depend on cost.
A relay is probably around 15-20!

Very cool Mikey, I can't wait to see it. Yeah, definitely post some pics when you get done. I'm curious as to how blue the 10K actually is. My buddy has the 8K Raptor kit, which is super bright white with just a hint of blue. I personally like a little more blue than the 8K puts out.

I know the higher the kelvin number the lower the brightness level you get,....but I'm sure yours will be nice and bright since you went with the 55W and not the 35W. I haven't actually ordered mine yet, so I think I'll wait until you get yours installed to see if I like the 10K. I may even want the 12K if it's not blue enough.

I was just thinking about something,....if a person had "The Big 3" upgrade and a 160 amp alternator, would they even need the harness/relay? I would think that would give you enough voltage to handle the start-up that's necessary. I actually have to upgrade my car with both of those in order to handle the Amp I'm installing. What do you think?

10k should be almost Purple.

Hope you don't drive in much bad weather because the visibility will get really bad. The 55watt won't help in those cases, just be more blinding to you (and everyone else).

It's the wiring that is the problem, not the charging system. It can only suck so much power through the stock headlight wiring before wires start melting.

Just make sure your lamps match the so called projector housings. If the kit is for your T/A, you sould use a bi xenon HID(H4).So your hi-beam function remains intact.Single xenon H4 will not have a hi-beam feature.I believe those ebay "projectors" are H4.

Also dont expect great performance from those ebay units. They are okay, at best. Some will say better, some will say worse. So your getting my opinion.55w might give off even more glare than 35w.Just have to wait a see though.

Well that's strange, every kelvin chart I've ever seen has shown the 10K as being in the Aqua blue range. As I mentioned, my buddy's truck has the 8k bulbs, and it puts out mostly a white beam with just a hint of blue.

Heck, I've even seen charts that show 12K as being more blue than 10K. Maybe that hint of purple that people speak of is seen as more like a deep blue to others. I mean, according the the chart below, I don't see any purple at all. Now maybe it's just me and you guys see something different, but I actually like how blue the 14K looks over the rest of them.

Out of curiousity, how does the color in the rain affect your ability to see ok? Maybe it's different on your bike than in a car or truck, but I didn't really see it as being that much different than his stock bulbs.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the big issue around the weather for you, especially living in Seattle. It's exactly why I moved down here 3 years ago after living in Renton/Kent/Bellevue for 41 years. Well, that and the traffic!!!

I'm just curious what the blue tone does to affect your visability? Are you strictly talking about night, or rainy/bad weather in general?

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

A Trumpet! Got a 04 Daytona 600 myself.That a 955?

With regard to the chart. There are sellers on ebay that show differing colors for the same rating, but in general.6000k is about where you start to see some blue, 10000k & purple starts showing up, 12-14k & violet is visible.55w systems tend to wash out some of the color. So a 8000k 55w lamp will look closer to 6000k 35w in color.55w 10000k more like 8000k 35w.Charts can be deceiving.

As for color affecting visiblity.Blue, purple, violet, is darker than white. So anywhere the darker color illuminates. That area will be harder to see that if the light were completely(or mostly) white from say a 6000k or lower rated lamp.Rain just makes it even worse because its just harder to see the road when its raining. The harder it rains the worse it gets, no matter what color the lighting.

A headlight is a headlight. The projector in my bike is the same as any other.

Basically, the higher the wavelength, the more glare. This glare is due to the shorter wavelength. You ever notice that some cars come with yellow fog lights? This is because yellow has a very low wavelength. (3k or so)

See this video on YouTube... identical cars, one 6k the other 8k. Notice how much more glare the 8k has. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qGEthp0MOU

When the weather gets bad of any sort there are a lot more particles of stuff in the air. These particles will cause the higher wavelength lights to reflect back at a higher percentage then the lower wavelength colors. This leads to more glare and less visibility as all the light has been dispersed earlier. In most areas headlights are required to be "white" for a reason, while fog lights may be yellow or white.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

I have both the 6k and the 5k in my 00 silverado and I don't have projectors, just the stock lens's. And I have to say that they work amazing! The only complaint I have is that you have to let the 5k's in my hi-beams warm up for about 5 seconds before they are at full brightness.
I have been thinking about doing this to my iroc too. Just haven't gotten very far on it yet.

EXACTLY! Which is why I didn't post a chart from ebay. This is where it came from: http://www.optionimports.com/itemMat...=&MatrixType=1

I do understand the difference in colors, and how the 55W changes the color output, but as I said before, I don't see the 12K-14K colors as being purple or violet. I HAVE seen these young guys who run around with the 30K setup and those are definitely Purple. They're also very dim when it comes to light output, which is why I'd personally never go any higher than the 12K myself.

The only thing I've ever looked into from ebay are the actual headlight housings as well as some true projectors. I did buy a set of those fake projector housings just to have on hand for future modifying. When it comes the HID kit, I'll probably go with the DDM tuning 35W in either the 10K or 12K depending on what "itsMikey" looks like after he posts his pictures.

I'm pretty sure 12K is the highest color DDM sells anyway. Also, I don't do much rainy weather driving anymore after leaving Washington. (At least not at night) What little I do, I'm sure I'll be just fine regardless of what setup I go with.

Just so you know.DDM has a store in HB, but they dont do internet sales. You can however call them & order. Then go down to pick them up.If you buy online it will come from San Deeggo.

Maybe you can cancel the SD order & call the HB store, but id call first & make sure they have what you need.

DDM Tuning is possibly the slowest shippers in the world...i just called and he said i would receive my package by the middle of next week..mind you that i ordered the package on the 10th of May..exactly a week ago. so after this i will not deal with DDM at all anymore.
Mikey

oh and DDM is in SAN DIEGO!!! literally an hour away...wtf..lol
Did you happen to read what it says on their main page? If not, here's the message:

"We are currently shipping 24 hours a day to catch up on backorders. We received our shipments after being cleared through customs May 12th and are doing everything possible to get as many orders out as we can.
With our upgrade, all customer information has been switched over, but order status prior to order number 85000 has not been transferred yet, please refer to the emails we send you for tracking and further information regarding orders placed on DDM Tuning v2. Your orders are not lost, they are in our internal system, and have yet to be pushed into our new database. Thanks for understanding!"

It appears as though they're doing some kind of system upgrade, so it seems to be more or less just a case of bad timing. When my buddy ordered his HID kit last year, it only took 5 business days before he had.

To be honest, it really doesn't surprise me that this happened. I mean with the prices they have and the fact their products come with a lifetime warranty, I'm sure their system upgrade was a necessity. At least with DDM Tuning you now know when your HID's are suppose to arrive. Your ebay situation,...well, that's exactly why I hate buying anything off that site.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)

i want to do this to my firebird! ive been looking for ways to increase my lighting. i upgraded my headlights to a converson kit running H4 ultra white 100w/90w bulbs... much better than stock but i burn up bulbs ever month to 3 months. car sees all weather. 3 months and a bulb just went out (exploded in the housing lol) these bulbs arent cheap either at like 16$ a pair.

does anyone know the size of the stock firebird headlight size? 7x6" or 8x6". i wanna see if i can find some projector housings and do something like this.
