Powermaster Products!

Hey guys, just wanted to share my experience with this Company, I went to the track about 2 months ago, just before my race to do some track testing, as I attempted to start the car in the garage to load it on the trailer, it gave me a bit of trouble, spinning the motor continuously, it started after a few tries, and I thought nothing more about it, I arrive at the track get inspected on the trailer, then proceed to my pit location, drop the ramps and try to start the car, and it wont catch, two revolutions and that's it, solenoid kicked out and stays out but the drive stops turning the motor! So I'm stuck on the trailer, and my day is over, only had the starter a bit over a year, and only fired it up 12 to 15 times tops during the winter, so I call Jegs to inquire about a replacement, and they agree to send one, but this thing is huge compared to my Powermaster and its a Jegs brand starter that doesn't have a smooth action like like the one prior, sure it starts the car, but I'm not happy with it!
I give Powermaster a call and ask if they service their units, and they say sure, just Mark the shipping box Attn: Repairs and they will handle the rest, so I do it and a week later I get a call that they have gone thru everything, replaced a drive and put it on their starter Dyno to make sure it still passed their specs, and the whole operation was free of charge! That blew me away and I told him I would take the time to express the kind deed and dedication to customer service! Thanks for hearing me out, Slick....

Re: Powermaster Products!

Not my experience with them, I would never buy one of their products again. I bought one of their starters from summit and the starter gear would hit the face of the flywheel.

I called and emailed them, I ended up filing a complaint with the BBB and for all I am concerned they as a company can burn. I still have the piece of crap sitting in my garage, I wish I lived close enough to chuck it through their window. Here is our email chain regarding their crappy product, they are in reverse:

At this point I called them and they said they would send a call tag for it but never did. I won't pay to ship something that I already paid for a good unit. They told the BBB that I needed to pay to ship it even though they said over the phone that they would.

As we had mentioned in our last conversation, we had exhausted all means in troubleshooting the unit; the starter will need to be returned. The starter can either be exchanged through summit for another 9100 unit, or if they do not want to do that for you, it can be sent back to us (Powermaster) for inspection/replacement. If you would like to send it back to us, just give us a call or provide us a phone # and we will call you.

Thanks
Matt

Is this usual customer service? Send a customer a bad product and when he emails quit replying. Do I need to file with the BBB to get a response? This is the second time I have been ignored. As I stated in my last ignored email that I got the starter to mesh with an entire pack of shims from the parts store, about a quarter inch, and now the starter hangs in the flywheel.

So to refresh I got a starter that had the holes drilled placing the starter too close to the flywheel making normal installation impossible. I have been told over the phone from your company that it was impossible for it not to fit but yet I hold the proof. I have been told by email I had it on upside down even though it was not possible due to the shorter boss for the short bolt. I have pulled it on and off countless times wasting my time. I have spent an extra 6 bucks on shims just to make it crank.

I have a starter that is a paper weight and the company that made it is not helping me at all. I can take photos, provide video, whatever, this is just wrong the way I have been handled. I have not altered anything in anyway other than shimming the crap out of it. The motor and solenoid are good, the mount is what is machined wrong. I imagine this is the only piece of this you actually manufacture. I need a new mount that is in specifications. Can I be provided with that?

I got this starter to at least function with all but one of an entire pack of shims from the parts store plus the two that came with the starter. I would say it is about 3/8ths of an inch thick and the starter is hanging in the flywheel for a short time after the car starts. I also had to install the internal shim to get it off the flywheel. I tried putting in one more shim but it was still hanging and making a louder racket. I don't know if both sets of holes in the starter are supposed to be even but the two sets are off set slightly. I think the holes may have been miss drilled putting the starter too close to the flywheel horizontally.

Please advise.

I don't know what else to tell you sir. We sell quite a few of those units and generally do not have a problem. It you cannot get it to work in either position I would just return the unit, or you can send it to us for inspection if you like. Be sure to give us a call if you choose to send it in.

Thanks

I have not heard back on this yet, I replied I believe last Friday. Again by plowing I mean the starter gear would be hitting the area of the flywheel the teeth are attached to if I were to engage it. In one mount it is not clearing the flywheel, in the other it is clearing it by a good inch.

By plowing I mean it is into the flywheel by a good inch to where if I was to try to engage it it would be hitting the side of the flywheel. In the other set of mounting holes I have about 1 1/2" of clearance.

Do you have a 1/16 - 1/8" clearance between the pinion gear and the flywheel at rest? By "plowing" do you mean that the pinion gear is already engaged with the flywheel at rest, then you need an INTERNAL shim to move the starter forward 1/16" (not down 2 inches) to obtain that clearance. The round shim that came in the box is the internal shim.

thanks
Matt

I wish I had but I'm quite sure I put it on correctly. The starter mount has a step for the shorter bolt and will only bolt up one way. Without clocking it I installed it with the solenoid facing up like the oem starter.

You have the starter bolted on upside down. Flip it around and all will be well!

Thanks

Subject: 9100 starter

I purchased a 9100 starter from summit racing because the description says it fits a small block chevy with both flywheel tooth counts. My block has the bolt holes straight across, not staggered. The 9100 has two mounting positions and bolts up fine but in one it's too far away from the flywheel and in the other it's plowing it. No way shimming can correct this unless it's about a 2 inch shim. The car is a 1979 el camino with a swapped in 350. I know not what year the engine is, but a 1985 truck starter is on it now. The engine is 8.5 to 1 compression.

Please advise

Re: Powermaster Products!

I have the 9600 on my '69 350 block, fit with no problems and works perfect starting a 10.5:1 engine.

Re: Powermaster Products!

My buddy had on one his 71 chevy truck that had a 95 350 in it....After the starter fell apart 3 times, stranding him each time, I drove him to Napa, had him buy a new starter and bolts for a 96 Vortec 350. The small case vortec starter works perfectly to this day and cranks the engine over better than the powermaster junk pos ever thought about.
