Questions on cam swap on lg4 HELP!

Before anybody says to swap out my motor, I would love to, but I can't. I do not have enough money and just want to wake up my lg4. After constantly being picked on for having 165 hp in a v8 camaro, I put headers and an exhaust on. I was now thinking getting a little more hp but I did not want to spend a ton or have to ditch the computers. Does anybody have suggestions as to what the biggest cam I could put in without having ecm problems, and what I need to buy in order to do this build? I know I need the parts for the valve train but what exactly do I need? I am trying to price this all out to make sure it is possible. I am only 18 and would "like" to do the work my self. Any tips?

Re: Questions on cam swap on lg4 HELP!

Your '86 Lg4 should be a 4bbl carb'ed engine so the computer system on it is not as sensitive to changes as the TBI and TPI cars.

A 204/214* @.050", 110 LSA cam will give you a good boost in power. You don't want to go too larger in stock headed 305. The smaller size engine makes the same size cam act bigger than it would in say a 350 engine. Also your stock heads do not flow that well, so no reason to move the power band up too much higher.

Also replace your stock intake with an edelbrock performer (spread bore if you keep your stock CCC qjet carb)

For the cam swap you will need..
Cam and lifter set (hyd. flat tappet)
Valve springs to match cam's lift
timing chain cover gasket
intake gasket set
valve cover gaskets
Blue RTV
Anti freeze
Oil and filter to do an oil change with X2
Moly lube
Zinc additive for oil when breaking in cam

Damper puller
damper installation tool
on head valve spring compressor
air hold plug socket and air compressor to keep valve from dropping into cyl, or you can use clean soft rope and feed into the cyl via spark plug hole after you get that cyl to TDC to hold valves in place while you change springs..

Or you can pull heads off to change springs but then you would need head gaskets (fel pro 1094) and exhaust gaskets as well

Stock push rods and rocker arms will work fine with a milder cam like I mentioned above

Re: Questions on cam swap on lg4 HELP!

I have run the xe256 in an LG4 and although it had a little lope, it still provided better (slightly) than 20 mpg. Probably the largest cam one could use with a stock converter (but you'll be fine with the T5). Use the z28 valve springs with appropriate shims and seals (no rotators) and a new timing set.

A search will likely turn up several other experiences with that cam.

Don't think you'll see much difference between the stock intake and the performer and you'll lose EGR.
