I agree. Most around where I live are but ugly too. Is it that difficult to keep up a car. I mean come on, use some common sense and maintain the ******. Well then again everything around here is expensive. Yes I own a thirdgen but thirdgens are ugly in general.

what it is that 3rd gens are going through that faze where there are enough of them that have one foot in the grave because people have decided that they will drive it till it drops. i think most cars outside the real $$$ ones go through this faze. look at the 2nd and 1st gens. i don't know most of the ones i see still on the road are ether "show" cars or in the prossess of being rebuilt. about ten twelve years ago there were still alot of beater 2nd gens out there. 3rd gens are not that old.
not many people just "drive" the older 1st and 2nd gens. i know there are a few but the ratio is more towards show. give it a few more years when all the beat up old "mares" have gone to pasture, and most 3rd gens u will see will be in better shape (but there will be less of them)
just think in 2009 when people are talking of finding that rare mint 88 IROC you would have had yours for 5-8 years already.
just my two cents.

The problem is, there's so many thirdgens on the road and not enough fans of them. That's my theory.

Sad to say because I am a '91 Formula owner and these cars are so rare and most on the road are so beat up and hooked up to be a jerk off car. I see Jap cars and Suv's all over here in Miami, FL. Andy

It's because the damned things rust out so badly... They probably weren't designed to last twenty years. Hopefully my GTA will be taken of the "rustbucket" list soon.

My baby that needs work.

my car is not is great condition and i have a good excuse. I don't have any money.

People are always telling to do this, to do that with my car. Give the money and i will. The stuff is not expensive but i don't make a lot right now.

I have to do stuff on my own time and i rather have it running and looking not so pretty then to have it beautiful and not running.

But stuff has been done to make it a littler nice.

go to my website to see what i have done.

Hey cfirebird86 your car looks better than mine currently cause I have a primered fender, primered cowl hood and a primered front bumper. On top of that my old paint is faded so. Im almost done with the engine and interior so the outside is next.

The reason why we have so many trashed out 3rdgens is the people that get them and think of them as "just another disposable car" like a ford taurus or something, In fact I'm amazed that there are still so many around....I mean how many other cars from the same time era are still on the streets. All the real "cherry's" (or projects) are owned by people who have respect for the cars, and plan to keep them for life...

I see a ton of thirdgens here in Dallas. Out of a number of about the 35 that i see....only about 5 of them, including mine, actually look good.

On occassion, however, I see some of the 'Third Gens Gone to Crap' being prepared for new paint, ect. and I am pleased. In fact, I just saw a freakin NICE RS, couple of days ago that had a brand new paint job on it....it brought a tear of joy to my eye, really...

I'm shooting to get the rest of my Baby re-painted here in a few weeks. I'm very excited, and I can't wait to get it back all glossy.

The people better do it properly this time, though >: \ I shall make a list......

Must be a world wide problem. I'm on the road every day ,& although 3rd gens are not what i'd call rare in Australia, I'm lucky to see another 3rd gen in 2 months or more and when I do most of them look like a bucket of PUSS!. However when you do see a good one they r "GOOD"

When I got mine it was a total pos with rust everywhere and torn up interior. Well, I've painted it, worked the engine over and redone the seats. All I need now is a set of rims hehe. The 3rd gens I do see around though are beat to chit pretty good except a 92 which is in cherry condition.

Same problem in every town probably. To many thirdgens on the road and not enough people who care about them. Oh well. They will eventually die out and only us will remain.

Try living in snow filled minnesota (eventhough canada and sweden prob have me beat), but snow = salt = RUST. The third gens here are either in excelent condition (stored in winters, like me) or driven all year for 20 years straight (rusted to heck).

Lots of rusted 'maros and ******s. (no rust or ****** for me , thank you)

There's a good deal of beat ones around here, and there is also a good amount of ones in nice shape. The import craze is real big where I am spending my summer, and I have seen 2 other thirdgens, a sweet maroon IROC convertible and a maroon and yellow IROC coupe. I also have seen a beat to crap firebird around here that probably doesnt have much left in it. How much you want to bet when it goes up for sale, i buy it as a parts car and restore it. It happened before with my trans am...

I am guilty of owning a beat thirdgen, in the case of my camaro. And the paint, I dont care what little scratches or chips it gets. Why? I have the paint in my basement to paint it with, and will do it next spring break. I painted my trans am this spring, and will do the camaro next spring.

Here in central California there a quite a few good and decent looking Thirdgens but most are ccrap. Problem is that this area is all agricultural, therefore there are a lot of farm labor workers in the area and around here, beat up thirdgens are dirt cheap, which means many many Mexican's drive thirdgens. Probably why my buddies call me a Mexican for driving one. Anyway these guys don't care one bit about their cars, but they also don't have any money either. So when a car like mine rolls past them down some country road you can bet I'll always get a lot of looks. Anyway where I was going with this is that here where I'm at thirdgens are neglected because they are cheap transportation, which is too bad, but it makes me feel awesome when I've got 1 of only 2 beautiful Camaros in town.

Looks like everyone has different experiences in different cities. I used to live in Dallas, TX and you would see 3rd gens from each end of the spectrum from being mint to trash. I live in Austin now and you do not see alot of 3rd gens at all but the ones you do see seem to be in really good shape except for a few here and there.
My car is in good condition despite its mileage but is nothing to brag about. I am very happy with it and proud of what I have accomplished so far. Check out my sig for more info and my website. Here is a pic

hehehe

I bought one of those nice ones from Dallas. One less on the road there!

There's three levels of thirdgens as I see it. Creampuff, In need of restoration, and TRASH.

Around here, there's actually a couple creampuffs...guys that take care of them have them garaged year round until a nice weekend comes around. Gotta love thirdgen enthusiasts.

I cut the following out of the Daily Oklahoman newspaper story about meth (aka crank) labs, the story involved a policeman names Engles:

"Old Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds also attract Engles' attention because they seem to be preferred by cranksters. "They like them because they're fast, even when the windshields are cracked and they're full of dents," he said."

I taped that to my office door back when my T/A had a cracked windshield and dents...

That's what happens when cars cost so little that anybody can buy one. Thirdgens are DIRT CHEAP, so they get bought up by people that need a cheap car. Around here in the Rust Belt, a lot of them have disappeared already, just like the ****ty 2nd gens did about 5-8 years ago. All I see now are nice 2nd gens, with the occasional beater. Unfortunately, there are a ton of poorly restored 2nd gens around, but that's another story. Thirdgens have gotten rare here, and nice ones are VERY rare. Give it a few more years and you'll see the junk ones starting to get weeded out.

You are joking right? You have one of the sweetest 92s I have seen. Which borla is that? And the new rearend? Very clean.

My cars appearance has gone down hill when it became a daily driver. It used to be in show quality a few years back. But I am setting a goal of getting it back to show quality and more upgrades. I need to buy a pickup so I am wondering home much I can invest in my car before next GM Nationals in Carlisle.

Most thirdgens in the area are pretty busted up... They are frequent too but I dont think I have really seen one in monthes that I could just be like Damn that is sweet. On the road at least.

yea, I noticed that too. Rust really isn't a problem here, it's the sun and the 80's paint jobs just don't hold up to well here. not to mention the plastic and weatherstripping.

Tons of cars in my area are in really good shape or really crappy shape. There is only a handful of people that respect and take care of them. It breaks my heart to see these cars get thrashed.

I agree Mine Was Mistreated before i bought her to restore

I bought my camaro from a friend of mine that let the stearing column get so bad it busted all of the rods that hold the tilt wheel up and it was laying in the seat. it was never cleaned up and sat out in the sun. when i went to get it out of storage to buy it from him the car had 4 flat tires and the shock on the driver side rear had givin up along with the sway bar in the rear hanging down and the exhaust from cat back was laying in the back hatch area.... it came a long way since i bought it. you can see a pic of it in my signiture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I buy alot of project cars per year and I have to say that the camaro is my favorite and I'm keeping this one for life!!!!!!!!!

I 100% agree with the "I drive a thirdgen, but they're ugly" comment.

If I didn't have so much money in this thing, I'd get rid of it. I just feel an attachment to the $10,000+ I've dumped into it only to run an 11.31... POS car.

Third gens are ugly?!?! That's ubsurd. Personally I think that there are very few cars to this day that are prettier than a clean third gen 'bird (ZR-1 'vettes come to mind, as well as a few Ferraris...). In fact the only thing I'd trade my 'bird for would be for a TTA or for a factory notchback GTA (I love that look).

Buying my car was the best thing I have done. I am so happy with it I am looking into buying another. Of course it is to combine the two. One is a Northern car and the other is a southern car. I will get a good out in the end. Even though they are a dime a dozen right now, much like my other car they will be worth a good bit of money down the road. And just remember it could be worse, you could have a four legged animal on the grill....

Unfortunately, there are a ton of poorly restored 2nd gens around, but that's another story. Thirdgens have gotten rare here, and nice ones are VERY rare. Give it a few more years and you'll see the junk ones starting to get weeded out.
+ the paint is the first thing to go on them. Which means that they rust faster. I see a lot of nice looking thirdgens in junkyard becuase pepole who take care of them are the ones that get hit by the drunks leaving just the ****y ones left (like the fact that birds will always crap on your car after you clean it.)

I agree with Jim that its cause they are dirt cheap so people buy them as beaters sometimes. What I don't see is how someone can let a car get as bad as some I've seen. I don't care what car I'm driving... if I have a Camaro, Firebird, or just a Corolla or a minivan, I'm going to take care of it. I wouldn't be able to just sit back and let a car go to ****.

I'm with you man...taking care of my car is just part of my daily routine. Besides the fact that I hate driving around in a dirty car, I'd rather not go out than be seen in a car that looks like crap. It's hard to impress someone in a dirty a$$ car no matter what it is, but for me I just feel gross driving a dirty car. Most people don't but that is why their cars look like $hit all the time covered in inches of dust with the words "Wash ME" on the back window.

My car is driven everywhere looking like it does below on an everyday basis. If she is dirty she gets a bath before being allowed to run around town with the other kids on the street. If I've gotta be clean so does she...lol

Each rustbucket/abused/wrecked thirdgen that enters the graveyard of autodom, it only makes the really nice thirdgens one more rarer and much nicer.

My '89 Formula 350 has 82,000 miles on it, but is extremely clean and has been well maintained. Only two winters on it an has been garage for almost it's entire life.

"Old Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds also attract Engles' attention because they seem to be preferred by cranksters. "They like them because they're fast, even when the windshields are cracked and they're full of dents," he said."
sad, but true......
There used to be country town about 40 miles from where used to live in Iowa notourious for crack and meth.....
about 1 out of every 10 crack houses had a violated 3rd gen in the lawn....

Alot of thirdgens down on oahu are atcually in pretty good condition. The thing that I dont like about them though is how their owners dont do anything to them (i'm not gonna get into a appearence type of thing and start another flame war) like the most mods most camaro guys do here (by that I mean 3rd gen) is like exhaust and a filter and maybe...just maybe! headers. Its really really sad that so little people modify them. Even the guys that go AutoX mostly only do like...drop springs and not really anything else.

90% are crap here. To have a clean thirdgen here is very rare, and defenetly turns heads.

many Mexican's drive thirdgens
these guys don't care one bit about their cars
they also don't have any money either

I think that the car you drive says a lot about your personality, your priorities, and your financial situation, but I also think that driving a nice car doesn't make you any better person that any other.
It is a nice thing that you have the opportunity and money to take good care of your car, but that doesn't entitle you to make false, and racist statements.
It is true that most of the people that hang around here try to take care of our cars, because we like cars, but many people see them just as a way of transportation.

I believe that appearance tells a lot about someone, but I also believe that what you say or write tells a whole lot more about you.

I try to keep my car clean and looking good, but not to impress anybody, but just because I like it. If sometimes I have to drive it dirty for a while, I don't worry to much about it, cause dirt goes away with a little soap and water, and besides that does not take away anything that I am, or believe. I have many things to take care of and to worry about, and I just feel fortunate to have the opportunity to take care of my car.
