i'm not sure what i'm going to do for a spoiler just yet... i spent my spoiler fund on powerball tickets.

actually, i never really thought about it. i'll figure it out once the notch is on and i have a little better idea what they'd look like. it'll also help to know what i can and can't afford.

Feiro Spoiler for me...though I'm going to have to tweak the mounting pedestals. Its a bit to low to be as larger as it is, so I want to raise it and change the pitch slightly. Make it a bit more aggresive!

Also we are going to Bruce's on Sunday to talk to the Fiberglasser about what he has to do to my notch to repro it. So I guess we will know this Sunday for sure if it is a go ahead...so It looks good folks! I will let you know first thing!

Just a reminder, since some of you may have little. or no experience with fiberglass parts...this applies to all fiberglass pieces, and not just this one...

Fiberglass, being an imprecise medium, and the nature of production cars and their tolerances makes it likely that some adjustment and fitting will be required. Be prepared to make some adjustments, both on the upper mounting bolts and possibly the latch mechanism as well. The same is true with a factory hatch. You'll need at least one helper for this, preferably two.

All fiberglass body parts are going to require more prep time for painting than a comparable steel, plastic, or urethane part. No fiberglass part comes out of the mold perfectly straight, at least not to showcar standards. Be prepared to prime and blocksand several times, guidecoating each time to be sure you're getting all the waves out of the part. This is true of ANY fiberglass part. A spray poly filler is a good alternative (much higher build than primer) to a standard primer surfacer, and can save you lots of time.

Minor scratches often occur in handling...you're going to have to sand the gelcoat to get the primer to adhere anyway, so this is not something to be concerned about.

Fully inspect the part for any damage before cutting, grinding, or painting anything...if you find damage, call the vendor (Hawks in this case).

ALWAYS test fit the part ot your car before doing bodywork and painting; any reputable vendor will take back a part that doesn't fit, but most will not after it has been painted. Even if they will, it is unlikely your painting expenses will be reimbursed.

If at all possible, store the unpainted fiberglass outside until you are ready to use it. It takes time for the fiberglass to fully cure and all the solvents to evaporate out of it. A couple days in the sun help ensure you won't have any problems later, after the piece has been painted. Manufacturers of fiberglass bodies often recommend several weeks of curing time, though this isn't necessary on a smaller, thinner item.

If you get any chips in the fiberglass, don't worry...a little fiberglass resin and fiberglass reinforced filler (I like MarGlass) can repair nearly anything. Pinholes are easily filled with a good quality spot putty.

If you have new hatch struts designed for an Aerowing-equipped car, you might want to go back to standard struts to prevent undue stress on the notchback.

Hope this helps!

Well, it looks as if this thread is dying down. It will be removed from sticky in one week. Unless there are other reasons to keep it a sticky longer, or to remove it sooner.

It appears that way because we're waiting on word about the notches. I would hope that we could keep this as a sticky at least until the group purchase is over; that way it's easy to find out the latest.

It's not like we're tying up the entire server by having this thread stickied.

OKie Dokie the notches are going to be made! Bruce had 10 people, but its now down to 9. Anyway, production should begin soon...

Let's here that collective *sigh* of relief!

For those wondering "what if I don't get one this go around?"

Well it might be a good 6mo to a year before Bruce will do another run of the notches. So if you are wanting to build that project soon, it might be a good idea to jump on the band wagon. I'm sure he can tack on a few more notches to this run...

He will keep me up to date on the status, so I can let you know...I will be sure to let you guys know when the 1st one pops out of the mold!

yay!

now i guess i'm glad i didn't spring for the exhaust... though the ticket i got the other day is gonna hurt my pocketbook pretty good, not to mention that i crunched a fender last night. fat tires, an 350sbc, and rain turn 'birds into rollerskates.

anyway, i took some pictures of the uncrunched side of my car today with my camera phone (i was REALLY bored at work...)

check out www.cardomain.com/id/kornshell... i'm too lazy to post them, and they suck anyway. i'll take better ones tomorrow morning once it's washed, and edit this.

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I really like the idea of the notch and would love to put it on my 91 Camaro, but its looks like I missed the deadline. I did see however on Hawk's site that you can order it for 650. Does that mean we can order them, but it'll cost more, or did he simply no remove it. Also,I'm not gonna be able to install this as I live in an apt complex with no garage. So could I just take it to a place like maaco and have them install it and paint it? Thanks

I don't think it'll be a problem to call and add your name to the list - give it a shot. And yeah, any mildly competent body shop ought to be able to install this. Course, you probably could too, with a couple of friends in about thirty minutes; the original hatch weighs a sh|t ton.

Hey newbie...glad to have you on board...

Give Hawks a call...he can add you to the list...the deadline was set up more to determine if the notch would be made. In other words, if he did not have said amount of orders by the cut off date, he would not make the notch at all.

So anyone who wants to come on and get a notch done in this run, you can...Call Hawks and add your name!

Again the cut off was to determine if the notch would be made..now that it is being made, then Hawks can always add a few more in. The more the merrier! Especially since he is not sure when he will do another run of them...6mo to a year...

As far as how easy it should be to install. We got the original on the car with Bruce, Joe, and I in about 10-15 minutes. We had another guy taking off and putting on the nuts and bolts on the hinges as we took of the glass hatch and put on the notch.

Joe and I will probably go up to Bruces when he gets the first few out of the mold to help with fitting them and to see how they came out. We will help with the test fitting. That way we will have practical experience to offer to help you guys with the install process...

Nothing status wise from Bruce yet...I know he has been swamped trying to get the 3 piece 5in spoilers taken care of. I'm going to call him this weekend to see how the glass guy is coming along. Remember this is not going to be an easy mold to make. Its going to take some time. Alot of reverse engineering. Not to mention trying to be careful to not ruin mine in the process. I don't think he is going to charge the $100 till the notches are made, but I'm not sure I will ask him!

i don't know, but if i dont hear something soon (like in the next two or three days), i'm going to have to drop out. i have too many things (necessary, not mods) that are going to need done to my car in the next few months. i just had to drop cash on a new alternator, and the bracket that holds it and my water pump on... i'm guessing it'll need a new water pump soon too, if not already. i'm running into more problems than even i expected with this swap. this is almost as bad as when i swapped the W41 engine into my cavalier, and i'm going to have to keep my priorities straight in order to still have my 'bird running come spring.

Has the project started? I've been out of state for the last month and a half. Although, my $100 deposit was never taken out of my bank account so... I guess I should call them.

I'm a bit late... but I would like to reply to some of what redraif said since I am one of those who wanted a factory notchback and I won't buy one. When she said she laid her hands on one and that she would have Bruce reproduce one, I was glad. But then I learned that it would be 600 bucks. To me, it is overpriced, because you can make all the jokes you want about canadian money but it is a fact and 600 bucks is close to 1k canadian and that is without the shipping... which is why I had to back out from this deal and from My RAII hood... I think those fiberglass parts are a tad overpriced in the marker and I am sorry that we cannot find a cheaper way to ship to canada and that we can't have that wonderfull piece for cheaper... but before attacking the comunity of 3rd gen... think, because guys like me back off only because of money problems

LT1Guy started a new thread with the announcement that they're almost done with the mold. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=205115 that's where updates will probably be posted, so i say we let this thread die, and direct all questions/comments to the new thread
