Oven must be dedicated to only powder coating and out in a garage, because toxic fumes must be vented.

2. Probably more importantly for me it will make it easy to clean, I like to keep the undercarrage of my car clean also. The powder coating is very tough, won't chip easily, and is slick, will easily clean off. I don't have to worry about the aluminum oxidizing.
3. Practice for parts of the car that will be more visable.

That is awesome!! I didn't realize a do-it-yourself powdercoat could be so cheap and turn out so good! That's simply amazing.
Hey, given you have a big enough oven available, is there any reason why one wouldn't want to powdercoat a rear axle like that?

Awesome job! I'm pretty close to you in Cheektowaga. Would you possibly be interested in coating my headers sometime? I'd pay you for it of course. A couple of us in the Buffalo area have been trying to get a group of people together. I already met with one other guy with a nice RS and we'll be trying to get together again when the weather is bearable. PM or e-mail me if you're interested.

Powercoating is like an addiction, every thing I pick up I think to myself can this be coated? It sure beats the stink of spray painting an having to wait for it to dry. After the part comes out of the oven, its done!
I have even made up little jigs to hold the bolts so I can coat the heads and do like 10 at a time.
I even poweder coated the flywheel. My machinest staired at it for like a minute and said, what is this stuff??.. it sure the hell aint paint! Then we got into a 10 min discussion on how it is done. Picked up the surfaced flywheel from the shop and another guy grilled me on how it was done also. They are amazed at how simple a process it really is.

They sell a special "green" tape that can withstand the temp. Just mask off before powder coating. After it comes out of oven peal tape off.... Also, You can use silicone plugs, that you place in holes or over studs, that can take the heat and prevent power on those areas.

Amen to that...
My family used to be in the pizza business (about 35 years ago in Chicago right before I was born) and still has a very large pizza oven.
It works too. It's probably about 8ft wide and 5 ft deep. I'm going to see if I can get my Uncle to haul it down here when he moves to AZ this spring.

Doesn't sound at all crazy to me. If I could I would power coat every peice of black metal on the car if not polished.
That trans looks pretty nice. Even though no one will see it, whenever you or someone changes the oil or works under the car, the trans will make working under there a little more pleasing, at least thats how I would look at it.

i got a question...
anyone think powdercoating exhaust tubes would be a good idea? Im guessing it would be able to withstand the heat.. and look a hell of a lot better....
anybody wanna chime in?

I know how you feel. When I got my system three years ago, I powder coated everything in sight to test out the colors (I had to for the online business I used to run). I ended up with translucent grape garden tools!
Now that I'm working on an LT1 conversion, I'll be doing gloss red to go with the Corvette engine covers to look like an LT4 set up. I'll be using the high temp powder for the headers too, probably in black or the dull white... Who knows...
For anyone else out there, it really is just about that easy to make any metal part look that good. Just remember to start with a totally clean part, then pre-bake it at 450 to outgass it. Outgassing gets rid of the gasses that escape from the metal when heated. Prebaking releases the gas before the powder is on the metal, otherwise you end up with bubbles and fish eyes everywhere. Prebake heavy metals (steels/alloys) for 20-30 mintes, light metals (aluminum/copper/etc) for 10-20.

Well I have got the whole thing put back together and rebuilt! I even powder coated all of the bolt heads black for a nice contrast. I'll post a pick when I get a chance.
