Maco paint job?

I am thinking about getting a maco paint job bec I am a kid in highschool that doesn't have alot of money to spend on a paint job. It's costing me. 550 to do the whole car in there cheapest package. The reason it's so much is because my front bumper is in such rough shape. So I was just wondering if any one has gotten a paint job from them and how it looks. And how long it might last me. Thanks

Re: Maco paint job?

Theres a bunch of threads on here about maco paint or earl shibe etc...
One thing i can tell you is that your either gonna hate it or like it (notice i didnt say love it, lol) But! theres ways to improve it that'll make a cheapie paint job seem alot better. All the $$ in a paint job is the prep and body work. If your trying to save money i highly suggest you take to time to sand the car yourself and make it ready for paint. Otherwise there just gonna rush through the job cutting corners on the prep. I would get another nose from a junkyard or a u-pull for cheap and replace it since yours is rough.
all that will help you alot with the outcome. ive seen alot of cars that looked better b4 they got painted in one of thoe shops. make sure thats what you want, sometimes a bad paintjob will wreck a car and will look embarrassing. And the paint will start to peel, fade and crack in a short time since the quality sucks. good luck and think it over.

Re: Maco paint job?

nothing wrong with macco as long as you do the prep work. as another poster said, there's already a few threads discussing this.

Re: Maco paint job?

I use to work for Maaco I wouldn't trust them to paint my lawnmower. We didn't sand the cars we scuffed them up with a red 3m scrub pad and used the cheapest napa paint which was 8 bucks a gallon back then came in 8 colors. We mixed them to get close to the color it should be.Most would peal off in big chunks in a year or less every few really stayed on over a year.

Re: Maco paint job?

550 for cheapest? They are ripping you off.
I got one on my camaro and they did horrible. The bumper is chipping like no other. I ended up paying 250. I mean its a daily driver so its going to get banged up. But it cleans up nicely.

Re: Maco paint job?

OK, I will tell you might want to take someone a little older and male with you. I took my daughters car over, first had runs. Left it right there. Second day they had a big spot they did not buff, left it. Third day had bad orange peel. Ask for the manager. Told him I didnt need the car and he could keep wasting paint. Or put someone on who knows what they were doing and the car would be gone. Paint job still looked new after 5 years. Do not expect a car that does not meet your standards. So what if it is only 500.00 they made the price not you.

Re: Maco paint job?

DONT do it!!! i was in your position three years ago, i was a junior in high school and they gave me an estimate for 640 and when i went to drop it off my dad went with me and he got it for $560, when we picked it up it was horrible, over spray on my tires, in the fender whels, on my exhaust pipe tips that i just had put on, areas in the paint that looked like drips, runs left and right, orange peel every where. and scuff marks on the windows, they tried to fix it but two days latter it was still horrible so we took it(got feed up with there attitude and work habbits)within five months the front bumper started to chip, so we took it back and they fixed it, now the front bumper has a bigger piece chiped off, clear coat completely gone, roof faded and looks almost as bad as the original paint job.....seriously man i know youre in high school and you want your car to look like the best, but cheap paint jobs arnt the way to go, wait till u graduate go to school and get a good job that makes good money so you can get a good paint job, everybody has their own expiriences and yours might not be as bad, just dont spen money you or your parents need on somthing your not going to completely love.

Re: Maco paint job?

Ive heard good and bad. If it were me I would save up and have someone with a good reputation paint the car. That way you know you can expect great results. When someones name is on the line and its their lively hood they tend to do their best.

Re: Maco paint job?

I had mine done by maaco around 4 years ago. Still looks good i didnt go for thier cheapest job though. You get what you pay for. I dont expect to go out and win any car shows but for a car that was 3 different shades of red and looked like a rotten tomato when i bought it for cheap i was pretty pleased. i definately plan on a new paint job down the road as time and money allow.

Re: Maco paint job?

if you wait till January they usually have a 1/2 off sale. the place here let me buy in in Jan and paint it in March. 550 is way too much.

couple of things. its just enamel there is no clear coat. bird droppings will leave a mark pretty easily. same with water if it rains you get marks. also they dont use flex so bumpers etc can spider pretty easily. if your car is garaged it will last longer

that being said most people wouldnt have guessed i had maaco paint, you can clean it up pretty nice. figure it will last about 5 years though. ive got about 8 yrs on mine its not perfect but its not terrible either.

Re: Maco paint job?

It depends on who is behind the paint gun. I got one from them back in the 80s and was pleased. My understanding was they paid minimum wage for people to jump on and sand/prep the car. But the painter made more and some were very good at it.

Re: Maco paint job?

They are independently owned I believe so one can be better then another. Like others said, it depends on the prep and then the painter.

If you can wait and not be in a hurry why not put it off and continue to save more $$? You don't have to spend $5K but sometimes a little more $$ can make a big difference. Go around and talk to your local body shops and see what they can offer you, get some prices and ask exactly what gets you what. Better to spend a little more once, then spend $500 now and possibly be unhappy b/c then it will cost even that much more to do it again later.

Re: Maco paint job?

My Dad worked for them for 3 weeks before he became disgusted and quit. I heard that each person that played a role in the job only had 30 min to an hour. 30 min to sand or scuff, 30 min to prime, 30 min for masking tape, 30 to spray paint. You really need a proper surface to lay down quality paint. They are using a scuffed surface, not sure if they even prime really but all for what ever type paint sticks to that mess for the time being. It could be a different type of paint that attempts to settle smoothly to avoid orange peel cracking bubbling or the one of the other several problems that comes with bad paint jobs.

Now despite the poor work with cut time, rushed employees, cheap supplies there are some that benefit from this. If your car already looks like crap and will just get worse in a year, you don't have much money then hey, 500 for the next year might not be a bad idea. Just know that your only buying a decent look for a short while. Save up some money over that year to get a real paint job. Oh and do look at their work before you consider giving them your money.
