Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
well this thread is kind of funny..
we live in a very nice neighborhood where everyone owns very high end cars, Dr's Dentists lawyers company owners.. ect live.... my wife was horrified i sold my M3 and bought a 92 B4C/1LE... she wont even get in it.... she tells her friends its someone elses and that im fixing it for them.. ahahaha
I just like the style of these cars, plus they are cheap.. ive had 4thgens but, didnt like it all that much.. loved my M3 but tired of it...
all my friends just keep asking me if i listen to Rat or REO Speed wagon in it.. and "where are the acid washed jeans"?? and of course "dude you need a Mul-let"
edit: why the hell is the word "mul.let" sensored?

= not the same thing?
You got me confused
j/k
Europe, no Stigma. I guess similar to Australia, 3rd gens are not al that common. Third gen Firebirds are however the more common amongst the 3rd gens, so the few initiated (US car fans) commonly misstake my car for a Firebird.
I've been stopped by passers-by a few times, asking me what kind of a car I'm driving there.
No one does that for Porsches or Audi's, and BMW's are the mul.let-machine equivalent of car over here. Especially E36, E46 3 series and 5 series up to 2006 are considered to be beaters for those who want to own a "bigger" car but do not have the money to buy a decent car.

My uncle loved his '89 T/A 5.0 TPI so much that when he was stationed in Germany he had it shipped from his house in Florida. Now he's going through a mid life crisis, and he got himeself a Z3 (and not even the Mclass one). The dude's like 6ft 5" and weighs like 220. I dont know what possesed him to get that car.

I like the Mini S. Plus it's supercharged. Anything is better then a Miata.

One is just European. To us BADA$$ muscle car driving Americans it seems gay. The Miata however is gay no matter what part of the world you in. America, Britan, even in it's homeland of Japan.

When Im out and about I get CONSTANT compliments from people (grocery stores, gas stations, red lights! Ive even had a guy stop in front of my driveway and ask if I would sell my car!
Ive even taken a few women out on dates with it (Not 1st dates but 3rd or 4th--Im 44) and with the t-tops off, the stereo turned up they are giggling like high school girls.
My IROC is 100% stock and in great condition so that helps alot! Even my friends have to admit that its a clean car and fun to drive around in!
Its all good up here in Seattle!

I sort of agree on the miata, and mini cooper, the mini seems ok/or even cool over in europe, but here they are both chick cars imo, ie. no self respecting straight man would buy one, unless he were absolutely clueless, beetles too, or the new ones anyway, though I can't imagine why any sane person would want a new or old one....

LOL. Maybe he got old, but who knows, but that is a pretty big leap though it must be said. Supposedly they are fun to drive I guess, and probably your dad doesn't car about going fast anymore, unless he bought a performance trim level, in which case he's clearly lost a marble or two.

What sucks is when the parts counter guy at the local Chevrolet dealership calls your car a "5.0 slow". He was the turd for even saying that as I was purchasing parts totalling over 200 bucks with them for my car. Well that dealership is out of business.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
It is usually older car guys that dont like thid gen camaro and Birds. Many of these dudes still run Muncie 4 speeds, 4.10 gears etc. They are intimidated by fuel injection and stuck in there ways. Drive what you like to. Our cars handle better, get better fuel mileage and have nice cozy interiors. I had an 82 z28 that I put a 350/260 GM crate motor in with a fresh TH350 and a rebuilt 10 bolt rear that ran great for a grand total of $3000. I will never forget the guys face when I beat hte ***** of his 1970 442 and he had his wife in the car at 2 stop lights on a sunday afternoon. His car was probably worth $60,000.

As for me - I'm glad I never sold my car when I was having problems with it (I started working on cars so I could keep my Camaro.. it ended up working out real nicely). I love the random compliments at gas stations. Many people appreciate these cars because I've noticed a lot of compliments from people that had them at one point in time, and have since moved to something else. You can see it when their eyes light up.

Only crap I ever get is that my Bird is a 305 and not a 350. Fbodies are semi common in my area and my Firebird is one of the better local third gens in terms of condition. Of course most of the people who give me crap on my "boat anchor 305" drive japanese rustbuckets or rusted out mini trucks with stock v6s that leave them sitting on the side of the road weekly, so I don't take it too personally, haha.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
Most people just say "WOAH" when they see it. I once drove by a feild of children playing with buble wands and butter flys in the afternoon sun (it was the perfect sceen), They saw my car and pointed and said "WOAH! LOOK AT THAT CAR!" They were only about 5-9yrs old I believe, so they didn't know what type of car it was. I circled the block and came back again and this time they ran beside me waving their bubble wands in appreciation of my car. That's when I realized my horn doesn't work. That's alright though, I was in a def child area anyway. ;A

Does anyone under 20 know what the "M" word even means? They weren't even alive in the 80s.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
From my previous experience the only thirdgen cars that really get hated on are the ones that were cheaply turned into drag cars. Usually a rough primered body, 15x10s with drag radials that stick way too far out, carbureted engine with wires all over the place, extremely loud, and driven by a questionable youth with a chip on his/her shoulder. Same thing that happened with late 2ndgens and 1stgens way back when you could actually buy them cheap. Its 4thgens turn now.
As far as my car is concerned, people are more enthusiastic about it than I am. Around here people think they are cool cars as they are so rarely seen driven on a daily basis.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
I try and give other 3rd gen owners a thumbs up/2 finger wave when I see them driving.
I get compliments everytime I take her out or fill up- which surprises me because I'm doing paint dead last, and the paint is ok (PO's garage/spraybooth job?), but I guess the fact I make an effort to keep her clean and tasteful shines through the waves in the paint and the scuffed front spoiler. I get a LOT of compliments on my engine bay, and did with my previous exhaust- finishing my LT/X/True dual system in the next couple weeks. I am amazed at the general ignorance of the public- "What year Trans Am/Firebird is that?"
The best compliment is from my daughter- almost 2 1/2 years old, she "helped" me wash cars a few weeks ago for the first time, and told me good job Daddy. When I washed my truck or the other 2, she just kept working on the Z the best a 2 year old can. She came un-f'ing-glued when it rained on "my Camaro!"
"DADDY- IT RAINED ON MY CAMARO!!! OH NO! BAD, NAUGHTY RAIN! GO AWAY RAIN!!"
Same thing with bird poop too . She worries about the Camaro as if it's mommy, me, or the dogs.

People mistake mine for a firebird all the time. Mostly because of the fire. The kid I babysit is always wanting to see it.

Ok i get what you are saying now, didn't catch it at first. (hard to show sarcasm with text ) They didn't want a car as big as mine, and my mom is the one that picked it out. As said before, the miata is a girls car, so you can see why she was compelled to get that one. Part that worries me is that i was joking around and told my dad i would trade him the Camaro for the Miata and he said no I almost had a heart attack. All in good fun though.

A buddy of mine and me went to a good guys car show one time and I parked my car right next to his new corvette and got 10 times more attention! My buddy wasn't happy, but it made me glad to know our cars are starting to see more respect. This is, and always will be the best generation.

I only ever get compliments on my car. Most of the time it's in the form of a longing stare by some guy filling up his tahoe as I drive by, or smiles and waves from girls on street corners!
My car's really clean though. Here in Washington where I live, you more commonly find these cars broken down in a field (matter of fact, you look on craigslist, and you can usually find one for 500 bucks that has sat for fifteen years cuz the fuseable links are blown). Mine was originally a Portland OR car and it belonged to some rich CEO of an engineering firm. As far as I know, it's one of a handful in my area that are in good condition.
My mom offers to fill my gas tank if I take her shopping in it, that's how nice of a car it is. She told me she always wonders why my dad always bought minivans when he could have had one of these!
On a side note, it seems these cars are extremely plentiful in north Idaho. They are driven by idiot teenagers and generally barely run. I see about a dozen everytime I cross the border.

I just dropped my 14 yr old daughter off at cheerleading practice...On my way out of the parking lot I had to drive through 10+ cheerleaders who were all walking to the gym..What did one of the girls say? "Hey, nice car! Looking good!". I mean these are the kinds of comments you would have heard back in the 80's! I think our cars are old enough now where they are getting some recognition and certainly by the younger crowd who hasnt seen many on the road.
Personally, I think the stigma is gone if the car is well kept.

I think our cars are old enough now where they are getting some recognition and certainly by the younger crowd who hasnt seen many on the road.
Personally, I think the stigma is gone if the car is well kept.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
I've owned my bird for 17 years and this is the first time I have ever heard the term "turd gen". The only crap I got about the car wan that it's a 305 and not a 350, which will change if/when the motor ever blows.
The funny thing is, when I got the car, I was the posterboy image of a thirdgen owner.....just out of high school, going to juco, listening to Motley Crue, G n' R, raising he11, and had a ****** Joe Dirt would be proud of, lol....and I still got nothing but compliments on the car.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?
the only thing i like about forth and fifth gen camaros is using them for parts.btw the miatas are ugly but theres a kit to install a 302 f rd and t5 that will make it run twelves and get 30 mpg for less than ten thousand including the price of the car.excellent sleeper.
