On ls1tech, it seems like if anyone has a third gen, then they automatically are supposed to have ******s ... unless they are mint and stock. Is there still that stigma attached to them? I find nowadays I don't mind nearly as much as when I was younger, but I wanted to hear from everyone else and see if that negative connotation has been diluted over the years. EDIT: LOL the site just starred out m u l l e t ??? I guess that answers my question then

The only ones I've seen local to me have only supported this stigma. Typical ragtag hillybilly setup.. but I've seen equal as many of those "same type" of people driving 4th gen F-bodies. 4th gens are now becoming affordable so they will carry that stigma not long from now while thirdgens continue to increase in value over time (thus having the stigma 'swap places' I guess you could say).

Ultimately, what people say doesn't matter anyways. Just don't do dumb things to/with your car and you won't support a stereotype like that.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

I dont run into many 3rdgen (turdgen) haters. And now that there is a whole new generation of young guys (like me) getting these cars, it's gained new popularity and repect. Infact, i think most of the guys that mock thirdgens are thirdgen owners. Mostly 350 guys ragging on 305 guys. I am am a 305 guy and have def. noticed that. Anyone who doesn't like it can suck on my tail pipes (emmsion legal in all 50 states of course).

Considering my 305 got me 27 MPG, I never ripped on them as much of a boat anchor they are. Definitely reliable. I cooked that motor real good from a dead waterpump and it STILL ran perfectly fine before, during, and after the problem. Wasn't a fast car, but got me where I needed to go without problems. That's good enough. I've since gotten a 355 though so times are different now.. but so is the entire rest of the car.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

Your car is your opinoin and others will have an opinion about it. I had a '79 Z28 7 years ago and ran into the same problem I have today with my Iroc, it's just in that spot where nobody respects them. Most never hear the story's about the 1st gens in their wierd stage, they went through the same thing, it's just history repeating itself and one day our cars will shed the steriotypes too. My car doesn't represent 3rd gens very well, but I don't get any negative remarks about it from anyone, but I can see what they want to say.

At least our cars don't look like overturned boats and Chrysler Sebrings. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

yeah i get lots of crap. ive owned 2nd, 3rd and 4th gens and my favorites are 3rd gens. 4ths gens are soo boring and to me are considered the new "honda" cause everyone can buy them.

where as seein a clean third gen or one thats in the process of bein cared for earns more respect to me since theres soo many that werent/ arent taken care of.

I virtually never see any thirdgens on the road, but I assure you, when I do, they are colossal turds 90% of the time.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

An Aussie perspective - same over here - thirdgens are pretty rare on the streets of Sydney, have seen only a handful in the last decade or so. They were never sold here, so all are low-volume imports.

There's a range from one patchy beat-up camaro, to a showroom condition Recaro anniversary T/A (I think!), I remember seeing. Mine's near the top but not quite showroom.

Nevertheless, they are rare and unknown enough to have no such stigma. My T/A is always getting comments like 'nice Camaro', 'nice Kitt', or even 'nice Ferrari'! Actually, there are far more Ferraris around.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

i catch alot of heat from people, but my camaro is farrrrrrr from stock. i think the only thing i kept stock was the rear quarter sections. even though i used aftermarket fenders, made my own front chin spoiler, and currently making my own side skirts, it still looks like a third gen. i just ignore everyone. i want my camaro to stand out.

If people are dissin' on you and your car, maybe you should find a better class of people to hang with. I never catch any flack that I know of, usually people like the car and compliment it or do not say anything at all...

All I get are good remarks and how good it looks. Also they can't belive it is a 1987 model. Not too many nice 3rd gen cars in my area.

I think the only person that gave me a problem was this idiot "buddy" (forget that) with a 90s s10 with some 350? I never said anything about it and he always made jokes about the car and the 305. His truck will never be anything more than a cut up truck from the 90s.

look at it this way, 3rd gens are starting to gain in popularity, and IMO, 4th gens are starting to become the new "3rd gen". Mostly owned by young punk kids, and starting to age. Let the haters hate.

and no, i never get crap for my 3rd gens.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

Since mine is mint and stock, I get a lot of good feedback.

I don't think it's the car...I think it's the driver and how they care for their car. I see some pretty cherry 1st gen Camaros on the road, and I've also seen some 5th Gen's already well on their way to becoming Billy Bob specials.

Let the haters hate...I still love my car. I bought it for me, not them.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

I used to catch flak from my uncle and other people for them being "throw away cars" not real muscle like the 60's rods. Which didn't make alot of sense to me since their factory times are similar or better than 80% of the 60's/70's cars. Most of the 3rd gen's that where mobile estate specials around here have died out. Now if I see one they are generally nice and when I am in mine I get a couple people that look at it and nod their head in approval.

I get a few high school kids in mustangs making fun of my car, but 95% of the people that see it respect it, and tell me how nice it is. I never got one comment about them being hill billy cars or anything like that. I guess it depends on the area you live in, and the driver of the car. Oh and im 21 by the way, so im just a kid as well.

I never got any negative comments in person - mainly just hearing things on the internet from people. I tend to hope/think that the majority of people are smart enough to keep their trap shut when they don't like something about someone's car in person

I get crap because I sold a 2008 Corvette Z06 to buy mine, but I don't get crap about my car.

Every so often, I see one ore two nice thirdgens around, and there are a few Florida 10-footers in the area (they look good rolling but up close you see the undercarriage rust and the interior wear).

Yeahyuh. High five my man. I hang around a crowd of really respectfull people, and even my friends 89 V6 firebird (in need of paint and a few repairs) get some positive attention. I never hear anyone making fun of or tearing anyone down for their car or style. Even the mustang guys are cool ().

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

If your car is not a turd you wont get disrespect. If you come to a show/meet with neon lights and rattle can painted wheels and a stock v6 or 305. Add in some extra Back spaced rear tires (tires sticking out) and some side pipes, You are going to get crap thrown your direction.

It has nothing to do with owning a third gen specifically, but maybe how little the owner knows about cars or fabrication.

If you are talking about other forums, I can see how one might disrespect a third gen because of their reputation. Usually throw a few pictures up and people tend to automatically change their tune and become interested.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

I had the car painted a year ago and just got new wheels for it...but before that, maaco painted body with a flat black bumper and hood I still got compliments on it almost every time I went to a gas station. With new paint I got even more attention wherever I went. I have yet to mount the new wheels but when I do, I don't see how anyone could talk negatively of my car other than it only having a V6(will swap to LSx one day.) Maybe i'm just not old enough(25), or when these cars were produced I was in germany where there were rarely any 3rd gens, but I have never seen anyone with a m u l l e t driving one of these. I would say late 2nd gens had that stereo type more so than 3rd gens. It really depends on what shape your car is in. I rarely see decent looking third gens driving around, mostly beat up ones but if you compare that to the 1st and 2nd gens, I rarely if ever see them driving around. I have to go to a car show to see them. One day that will be the case with our cars.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

If any LSX car owner jabs at my IROC beastie they only need to wait til my TPI car eats their LSX car for lunch. I hang with a group of classic car owners. Every Friday we meet up at the local shopping center for a show and tell. This group represents everything from a 62 Falcon ragtop to a 68 HEMI Cuda, to a 2010 Mustang GT500. My car and it's beastly TPI engine get alot of respect and never a word of criticism from anyone in the group. Around town the Beastie is known as a car to envy.

I did get flack from some crackhead on a ten speed one day after a 1/4 trottle quick step after a right turn on red. I just laughed.

3rd gens are losing the stigma slowly, 4th gen v6/lt1 cars seem to be the trailer trash ride of choice now

No one has talked trash about my car, just the compliments quit coming after some theft damage and a minor accident on the freeway forced the replacement of some body parts, leaving the RS in 4 different shades of blue

I got alot of 4th gen buds and I get crap for a 3rd gen but its all in good fun. The car is faster then all of theirs.

I got some import buds that like my car since it looks "modern" to them. I guess the racing seat interior, 18/19" C6 wheels, lowered down and clean black paint is appreciated by their crowd. And its turbo so it fits right in.

I admit tho, I rarely ever see another nice looking thirdgen around. Some mint/stock ones that are nice, but never a modded one.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

I agree a lot of it has to do with the owner and how they treat the car, and also that the stigma does kind of move around, these days a lot more people get thirdgens to actually make nice, instead of driving into the ground(though there are still a lot of these) Personally I haven't gotten dissed at all, gotten 1 or 2 compliments, but anyone that knows me, or at least knows cars, knows that its a work in progress, its come a long way since I got it, and it does still have a long way to go, but its getting there, dying to get some new paint on it, but got to get it running again first.

It did get impounded when it broke down at a gas station(was a cop, not the gas station, I informed them it was broke down and getting towed) because it was supposedly an abandoned vehicle(even though someone went to the trouble to put a new license plate, windshield, a fiberglass hood, IROC-Z rims and a new exhaust on it ) But I cannot speak to any more on the subject with out going on a long winded curse word filled rant, suffice it to say that jackass b-cop ruined about half a year of my life, and cost me $400+, and I would punch him in the face given the chance. I mean seriously, shouldn't there be some kind of protocol where they have to call the owner to find out what's going on with it, isn't that the type of thing that registrations are for............govt has some serious shortcomings when it comes to car laws, ask me bout the time they revoked my registration cause I cancelled my insurance on my non running car(for obv reason) and didn't turn in my brand new $100 registration right away cause I was trying to get it running again myself(was broke now)(which the shop would've had done in a jiffy, except some jackass had my car impounded the day it was gonna be towed to the shop
And here I went off on a bit of a rant anyways....can you tell I'm super POD about the whole ordeal.

Yes you did... all depends on what shape the car is in mostly. Tasteful mods and looks like it has a future or does it look run down and trashy.

Not the point, there should be a law requiring them to notify the owner prior to impound, if nothing else, to at least find out if they are doing something to have it moved. How much trouble would it really be to run the plates and call the owner?
Just like there should be a law/form/provisions to file for vehicle insurance exempt if its not running so you don't have to choose between your insurance premium or handing over your brand new registration.
And a half blind 90 yr old women would've been able to tell the car had some money into it, I've put more effort into my camaro than most people put into their marriages, to have it labelled as "abandoned" was nothing short of outright insulting, on top of the injury of it being impounded.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

I used to get negative comments, but now since its a "survivor" and actually clean, I get nothing but complements. I still have a lot of work to do making it exactly right (for me), but thats part of the fun. I've participated in 2 Power Tours, dozens of dragstrip passes, and now an LS1 swap coming this fall. The car just keeps getting better and better, and for the first time ever, as of this summer, I'mm PROUD to own a third gen!

I get some s*** all the time from my brother and his friends. All of his friends are so biased toward ford and imports its a tad unhealthy. I cant COUNT how many times ive heard "broken chevy" jokes or the "you'll be seeing taillights" comment.

I won't get into too much detail but my fiance loves my car and wants a third gen also. I also dated a girl who owned and loved third gens...beautiful girl...I messed that one up...point being, there are people and females who love our cars...as long as they are taken care of they will receive respect.

There is the ocassional jabbing at my 3rd gens. I have a '97 TA and I would rather work on my 3rd gens than my '97.

As has already been stated to some degree ...Any one, that knows anything, about how much work gos into a car to make it into a beautiful , stand out , labor of love so you can see the passion that goes into there ride will show some respect. Especially when they can see how much you've really put into it. At least that's been my experience.

I get the butt end of some jokes here and there, but not very often. And it's usually by some of my closer friends and it doesn't bother me.

My exact point. Make the the car look decent and it will receive compliments more than a junk car will. That will be added to this thread...thanks for the addition hasse.

Btw I own a geo metro with 200,000miles and it runs perfect doesn't mean i should sell it. Runs perfect and will help me save $ for my bird. Therfore it.means I should not.sell it.

I had mine in highschool. One of the fastest cars there, and it was just catback/gutted airbox L98 I had the straight A's and became an engineer. Not sure where the drop out thing comes from? lol

i agree, my body on mine is mint, lime green paint, interiors all stock and in great condition, it may not run 100% yet,(since it seems to be a never ending battle) but its by far imo one of the nicer third gens around in my area. yet even the banged up ones, i got respect for. mine was that way befor i got it. time, money, and dedication.

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

well this thread is kind of funny..

we live in a very nice neighborhood where everyone owns very high end cars, Dr's Dentists lawyers company owners.. ect live.... my wife was horrified i sold my M3 and bought a 92 B4C/1LE... she wont even get in it.... she tells her friends its someone elses and that im fixing it for them.. ahahaha

I just like the style of these cars, plus they are cheap.. ive had 4thgens but, didnt like it all that much.. loved my M3 but tired of it...

all my friends just keep asking me if i listen to Rat or REO Speed wagon in it.. and "where are the acid washed jeans"?? and of course "dude you need a Mul-let"

edit: why the hell is the word "mul.let" sensored?

Re: does anyone here still get crap for owning a "turd gen"?

In all honesty, around my town (not STL, but just my town which is a higher-end residential area) a good 90% of them are in really bad shape. Mine is solid, but the paint is dead on it now. Didn't used to be that way, though. It's getting repainted soon so that will change, however.

People like to run these cars into the ground because they're cheap... but prices aren't staying that way anymore. I've seen that in particular change... hopefully I'll get out of school soon so I can land a job and buy up a nice Formula or GTA before the prices get ridiculous... but then again, I still have a Monte Carlo and a Foxbody to buy up as well... among other things.
