Hatch Pull Down motor

I've got a 1991 base firebird, and ever since I got it, the hatch pull down has been unplugged because it ran down two batteries on the lot before they found the problem. I was thinking this would mean a stripped gear inside the motor. No problem, I've rebuilt the headlights already, this shouldn't be too hard. Well I hook it all up and nothing, so I think the motor itself is shot, possible from running hours on end when it ran down the battery. I'm pretty sure I've got the second type of pulldown that I've heard of being that most of it is plastic, and my VIN is 230837 from left to right. Anyway, is there a rebuild kit for the pulldown, when I uhbolted the assembly, two plastic looking parts fell into pieces in the trunk area. I'm guessing they were just shims to keep it lined up on the rails. Also, how much would it be to get a new motor, or how much should I reasonably pay at a yard for this? Sorry for the long post,
David

Yes, according to your vin# you have the newer style (aka second design for 1991). To my knowledge there is no rebuild kit available. The only item I have for it is the gear nut, which you said you've already replaced. Expect to pay $75 and up from a used parts reseller.

If your talking about the guides that hold the thing that goes up and down, YES GM has those and somepeople on the boards have made them for people or have them.

The metal rails that guide the pull down are fine but there were little plastic pieces that looked like they kept the mechanism the correct distance from the rail itself that fell to pieces. I can't imagine finding any of those used so I assumed there may be a kit or at least something to rig it with.

I (meaning Top-Down Solutions) make the guides for the earlier version (1986-91). I have tried unsuccesfully to purchase a 1991-92 hatch pull-down unit to see if there are components on it I can fabricate. If someone wants to loan me one to take apart and see if I can do something with it that would be great. I'll pay the s&h both ways. But I have nothing to repair your unit at the present, (aside from the gear nut), which is the same as used on the 1986-91 version.
