Making my Own Notch back

Anyone have any idea how hard it would be to make my own notch back hatch? I just didn't know what type of materials would be good for this and what would hold up to the elements and paint.

Thanks

If you don't even have a clue on what to use I don't think this should be a thing you should tackle as a first projcet even more so because you have nothing to cast a mold out of. However I suppose to answer your question you'd use fiberglass. I think I'd look at a junkyard to find a rear glass window that is approx. the size you'd want on your car...perhaps from a Del Sol a Fiero...or get some custom glass made in the size you want then mold something around it. If you have no creative or artistic ability this isn't for you. Molding a piece as big as a notchback with no reference is gonna be a PITA. There are several ways to cunstruct a base using perhaps foam...like they use for making front nose pieces....manufacturers get large blocks of foam that they then carve and the mold a negative to then cast the fiberglass on it. However I don't think foam would be a viable option for a notchback I'd imagine something like thick gauge wire or even a wood fram and making the outline of a notchback and then covering the wire frame with larger thin pieces of wood to cover the frame. Then you should be able to sand and fill in the area and come out with a more smooth perfected shape to then cast a mold out of. Lots and lots of work

Would a real notchback hatch work? If so, why not try to find a wrecked one and buy the hatch. Or, you could just sell your car and buy a notchback. As for the one that GT Auto sells, the pictures aren't that good, but it looks like a crappy, poor imitation of what the factory one looks like.

Just my .02 though.
